WSJ: New iPhone coming this summer, and may be coming to Verizon

Get ready for the "VeriPhone." The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will be releasing a new iPhone this summer, and "appears to be working" on a model for Verizon Wireless. They claim it's a CDMA-based iPhone, and that mass production is slated to begin in September, but it's unclear when Apple will make the model available. The report notes that one Pegatron Technology Corp. (no relation to Deceptacon Megatron) is contracted to build the model.

There have been plenty of rumors already about a Verizon compatible iPhone, but this is the most credible report that we've seen, saying it's happening sometime this year.

Since its launch, the iPhone has seen two major refreshes, both occurring during the early summer period, and it appears that Apple will be keeping with this trend. However, if true, the release of a Verizon compatible iPhone marks a significant break from the single-carrier, AT&T life that the iPhone has lived in the U.S. since its launch. In addition, a Verizon-compatible model opens the door for Apple to appeal to an audience that, whether due to a coverage, rate plan or any other issue, did not find the iPhone compelling enough to switch to AT&T. As always, we'll have to wait and see -- the WSJ says a product announcement will take place in "June or July" as usual.

It is kind of nutty for Apple not to have models for EVERY carrier. That would hinder the efforts of other companies to come out with iPhone wanna bes or even better than iPhones. I'm tired of this silly anti-AT&T stuff tho'. I've never had a problem. It's just group think.

They made the Ipad to only work with GSM... They are not going to go with Verizon. Steve jobs doesn't care too much about "more money' when it comes from companies he doesn't like. That's where it boils boils down to...

If it was about money, they would have opened the iPhone for all the carriers... Apple has always been selective and pricey, which is what I hate about them, but the iPhone is hands down the best... For now anyway...

I wasn't misinformed yes cdma networks are going to still co-exist but the fact is it would be dumb for a business to develop a phone for a old network when there is a new one that is going to be coming up and would be compatible with both carriers your looking at selling to. That's business 101 why develop a cdma phone when you can just work on an LTE phone for later and sell when both networks are good to go duh!!

I'm not a genious but product development is expensive and why spend money if your making lots of money with what you got 2 billion apps sold and the money i pay for my developer account as well as thousands other do to.

I just don't see why everyone keeps talking of an iPhone coming to Verizon it would be stupid to make a phone for cdma networks when there going to phased out eventually, and developing technology for a short term basis would be a business failure as any logic would present. The best thing that Apple could do if they wanted to offer Big Red a phone would be to develop a LTE based iPhone and then when offer it to Verizon when they have established an LTE network. Anything else I would see as foolish not to mention it would seem like bad karma to offer your phone to a carrier that has ads bashing your only phone you offer. That just looking at the business side of things and I might be wrong, but I don't think I am to far off from what Apple would say. Plus I'm sure all the Big Red customers can be happy with their Google based device not that there's anything wrong with Droid it's just not my iPhone. Cut an Dry, In business you can be best or first- I say apple is both!

That's because you have been MISINFORMED. CDMA isn't going away for AT LEAST the next 10 to 15 years. Why?

Backwards compatibility.

Just because LTE comes out to market, doesn't mean that CDMA is going to go away. It still needs to support the CDMA market which will be around for a very very very long time.

Would an iPhone on the Verizon network be able to surf the web whilst on a call? Like they are currently plugging in the AT&T commercials...
