First Look: Game Table for the iPad

Here's some screenshots for another upcoming iPad app called Game Table. The app brings Checkers, Chess, and various card games onto Apple's tablet with detailed graphics and an "intuitive" interface -- the developers claim it's like carrying full board games around with you, but without all the little pieces and doodads.

Unfortunately, that also means that you don't actually "play" any games on the device -- it's just a series of boards and interactive pieces for them, so it's up to you as the player to determine how you want to actually move them around. That could be either a benefit (if you have a weird variation of poker or chess that you like to play that wouldn't normally be found in a mobile game, there you go) or a hindrance, if you'd rather your board game action be a little bit more guided. But the price is right -- the Game Table is set to release for just 99 cents. Game Table will be available on the App store at launch.

the ipad is great for a chess board. there is no AI (in this version) yet, so improvement is expected. there is a new entry in iphone (not ipad though) board games which might also be interested, 10 in 1 with strong AI, also worth a look: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/all-in-1-board-games/id364875029?mt=8

I wish it had a Go board included. That's the number one thing with fiddly bits that tends to get thrown in the trunk for travelling at my house and it'd be great to not have to bother with it. I'm sure someone will make a Go app that can work like this one, but it would be nice if it could be bundled with other game boards.

While this is a nice idea and apparently pretty good execution, I do get the impression that this and other iPad developers are taking the easy way out right now, just to be sure to have something out as soon as possible.

This application would have so much more potential if it did include game rules, playing against AI, playing over the network, etc. Now its just a bunch of pretty images that you can use just like you would use a normal chess or checkers board. Nice, but not great, definitely with only 3 boards available (where's draughts? most people from Europe don't play checkers, they play draughts).

hmm, I understand the reason that they did this, So I'm not sure if I should applaud them for making it look like its in such a good light. Besides that, I quite like this idea. I just wish there was a way to include rules if you wanted to.

Actually, from what I've seen, Engadget's been pretty accepting of it recently, both from the writers and commenters. Gizmodo on the other hand....

Err.. how the heck do you play poker without seeing your opponent's cards (and vice versa)?

It would be really cool if it showed cards based on the position of the iPad. If the iPad is flat, all cards in hands are face-down, if I tilt the iPad towards me then my cards reveal, etc. This could work for up to four players without getting too problematic.
