iPad game announcements out early and often

Words with Friends HD has also been announced, and it looks excellent -- big, bright, and beautiful on the iPad's screen. The extra space also gives a little more breathing room for chatting while playing with friends. There's not a lot of actual information about the game out yet, but we presume that you will be able to play with friends still using the game on their iPhone. Doodle Blast HD was announced as well, and it looks good. There's no doubt at this point that the iPad's App Store will have plenty of titles ready to go on day one.

Since there will be a limited number of apps on the store day one, maybe they are getting a little greedy with the prices. Im positive once there is more competition on the store prices will start to drop.

I already paid a good amount for that game on the iPhone and I think they're being overly optimistic if they think I and many others will pay $7.99 for a higher res version. Also, as much as I love Field Runners, I'd have a pretty hard time justifying $8 for any tower defense game. I wish them well, though, because I'm looking forward to a thriving gaming community on the iPad platform and I know they need to make money to keep developing.

While I was reading it I was thinking if the same thing would happen to the iPad that happened to the iPhone/iPod touch (i.e., the race to the bottom in terms of pricing). Then the thought hit me that these developers might be counting on it and may simply be charging a lot initially to effectively "gouge" early adopters. Since there will be less competition on launch day, people wanting to play with their new devices will "have" to pay the higher prices. Just a thought!

Whether current iPhone users with the basic game, such as Flight Control, are discounted when the HD version is purchased, or given to the previous owners when buying the "iPad HD version." I'll be a little disappointed that I'll have to purchase these games for the iPhone and iPad. I thought the main purpose of having access to the App store was to use the current versions of these games on both.

I was also under the impression from the iPad event in January that one version of the app was the goal, but it seems like many developers are creating an iPad-specific version, and charging more for it. On the iPhone, for the most part, paying for apps is 99 cents here, $1.99 there, but on the it'll be a lot harder to justify impulse purchases on the iPad if it's $2.99 here, $7.99 there.
