Navigon updates Mobile Navigator North America
These Navigon guys really do constant upgrades and enhancements of this popular app. Today, the US$79.99 North American version of the Navigon iPhone app has added connections to Facebook and Twitter, along with Navigon MyRoutes. According to the company, MyRoutes recommendations are based on the personal driving behavior of the user, the day of the week, and the time of day. MyRoutes always shows the best possible route for the driver on the basis of his or her driving behavior and by means of an optical "MyRoute" indicator. In addition to this recommended route, up to two alternatives are displayed.
Also added is the option to buy Panorama View 3D, which gives you a more topographic view of the terrain based on NASA data. That option is an in-app $9.99 purchase. The 3D views require an additional 580 MB download.
The Panorama, Facebook, and Twitter features will be coming to the recently released lower cost regional versions of the app. In fact, a spokesman for the company told me that the less expensive versions of the app will include all of the features of the North America version. The MyRoutes feature has already been included in the regional versions.
I've just downloaded the 1.46 GB update, and will be testing the new features over the next few days. I will report soon on my findings.

in case anyone is wondering, the TomTom car kit works with any GPS app. At least, it works with Navigon and the few other free GPS related apps I tested it with.
March 30 2010 at 2:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHey, jb510, it's not a bug it's a feature. Motion X includes music data while Navigon doesn't. It's like saying one word processor includes a spell checker while another doesn't. I can understand wanting this feature, but I'd rather devote as much screen real estate to navigation information as possible. If I forget what music I chose on the iPod, I can easily jump back to iTunes - not difficult nor time consuming. Just a personal preference.
March 30 2010 at 2:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNavigon is the beat heads up, I did have Tom Tom and I deleted it, because most of the time I can't understand the tts, ex. Keep right toward (Whitestone branch) I know Whitestone bridge never heard of branch. Night mode Dan that crazy aZZ blue color. Navigon all the way 10 stars.
March 30 2010 at 2:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGot the update. I like Navigon a lot. It does tax the iPhone a lot... using it all day actually drained the battery even though it was plugged into the car. Perhaps this new edition is more efficient.
March 30 2010 at 1:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCan anyone tell me if they've fixed the podcast bug? Ie podcasts not showing up from the music player within the app?
March 30 2010 at 12:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNope still not showing up with this update
March 30 2010 at 1:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDamn it... This is so freaking annoying... It's been like this for as long as they've had iPod integration... Was that version ? I know it's not an OS bug because it works fine in MotionX.
March 30 2010 at 1:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been considering replacing my Garmin Zumo with an iPhone nav app - but which one. I often find myself in areas with no cell reception for extended periods - which of the nav apps store the map data locally?
If the app requires a cell signal to operate (display position or calculate route) then it's no good to me.
no cell phone reception required to get a gps lock and the maps are stored locally on the phone
March 30 2010 at 7:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIs it me or does Twitter/Facebook integration sound like a nice idea in principle but a privacy nightmare in reality? Surely a targeted means of keeping people informed of your progress is a better idea that would be served with "old" technology like email or SMS. I like the idea of, for example, keeping my mum informed of our progress when driving across the country to visit but I don't particularly want anyone else to know.
March 30 2010 at 11:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyyou guys must have a much better GPS chip in your 3GS, because my iphone takes a VERRRYYYY LOOOONG time to locate me. For finding my location quickly, its completely useless.
March 30 2010 at 11:13 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLove the app, always have. Glad they always make it a bit better.
March 30 2010 at 11:07 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDefinitley seems faster and more responsive on my 3G.
Haven't had much luck with the 3D terrain though. Everything looks flat even though I live in a hilly area. I guess I need to drive through some mountains.
