Apple store calling to confirm iPad orders
Just five minutes ago I got a call from the Apple Store at the Walt Whitman Shopping Mall in Huntington Station Long Island, NY, confirming that I would be picking up my new iPad on Saturday. We agreed that it was for the 64GB Wi-Fi model. I was told that pre-orders would only be available for pickup until 3 pm, and was asked when I expected to swing by and pick it up. 9 am sounded good to me and to the store rep.
This leads me, you and probably everyone else in the world to question how supply is going to meet demand. With my local Best Buy possibly getting 15 units, and Apple Store pre-sale estimates rising as fast as Apple stock, my crystal ball shows a lot of unhappy campers come Saturday night. But I won't be one of them, and presumably, pre-orders are covered, as long as you come in during the appropriate time.
Did anyone else get the same confirmation call?

Brilliant!
APPLE PASSES THE BUCK ON UPS SAT DELIVERY ! (Moves blame for iPad not delivering onto UPS) !
I just got this email from Apple Store (from a "do not reply" email addr)â¦
Looks like they are refunding my "expedited shipping" claiming it's not necessary... and then moving any blame for not getting an iPad on the PROMISED SAT DATE ! (the magic April 3rd) onto UPS !
They (Apple store) now claim "too bad if UPS don't delivery in your area on Saturday" !
Well Apple...
You chose Saturday April 3rd as "The Date"... NOT me !
And... You also chose UPS... NOT me !
Apple also knew at the time the order was placed that UPS does not deliver on Saturdays in all area's, yet decided to ship via UPS anyway ! They knew where I lived from my Zip code, they knew that "Apr 3rd" was the date to deliver ! They knew I wanted "expedited shipping" too !
Apple FAIL ! and worse... Passed the blame to me and UPS for their failure !
Now I know I'm not alone here... So, you folks had better check this out if you want iPad's on time !

I not only received a phone call but more. Evidently, since I'm a 'business customer', I don't have to wait in line to get the iPad. I was told by the more than cordial Apple Business Rep that I could set an appointment to bypass the 'line' and be on my way within minutes. The rep further told me that if I wanted, I could sit down with any Apple Business Rep and together we can 'set up' my iPad...email, calendar, etc. I agreed to the appointment time and was further instructed to act discrete when I arrive as some patrons may, "question why I get in before anyone else?"

A few possible reasons for time delayed rollout?
1. Supply constraints
2. Hands on user testing resulting in feedback to make improvements before sharing the love with other countries
3. Increased number of news releases, excitement generated when new countries are added
4. Measuring demand and matching the ramp up of production appropriately
Oh yeah, and if you're a fanboy like me, picking it up in the store is a helluva lot more fun than waiting for UPS to show up and unboxing it in front your dogs.
I've only waited in a ridiculously long line once for an iPhone (arrived at 730am, didn't get my iPhone 3GS until 3pm or so) -- apparently the in store activation was troublesome and slowed us down.
I'll wait in line again for the next iPhone but only if they don't have similar problems.
I like the reservation idea and especially the separate line for those who've taken the time to reserve.
@Rego "I have the impression that most companies that do business internationally in multiple countries roll out the product at home"
It varies. In the distant past (i.e. my youth, in the '80s) Sony would roll out all manner of thing in Japan first, and sort of use it as a "beta release" to figure out what to fix (the 1st gen walkman in Japan broke a LOT more then the 1st gen USA version). A year+ wasn't unusual between release in Japan and release in the USA, even on products that were originally intended for worldwide release.
Now a year+ is a lot less common. You still see it for things that have too much demand to satisfy demand in the initial country. You also see it for things that have significant redesign work for release in other countries (different radio spectrum, or even different encodings and higher level protocols).
I think the 3Gs had an "aggressive" multi-country rollout, and that was still "some number of countries per month", not "all at once".
I _want_ to say the XBox360 and PS3 and Wii were all multi-country roll outs are close to the same time (or the exact same time), but to be honest I really can't remember.
Any news in when 3g ones are shipping ?
