First Look: Mag Canvas for iPad

Here's a video of a sweet little iPad application that was sent over by Ken Matsui of mkftr. It's for kids, based on those old magnet drawing toys. There's not much to it, but what there is looks simple and easy-to-use. This seems like the perfect type of application that works better on a bigger screen like the iPad -- while there are a few of these available for the iPhone already, having a larger touchscreen to create some temporary art on will be a big benefit for the new device.

I know my littlest guy would have fun using it, and if you've got small kids and a long car ride, Mag Canvas may entertain for as much as five or ten minutes. That might not sound like a lot, but to parents, those few minutes can be a really blessed break. Mag Canvas should be available for the iPad right at launch.

My daughter has never, ever played with one of these magnet drawing toys because they are garbage. As a kid, I hate how awful they were at actually putting lines where you wanted, or even making anything resembling a line at all.

In reality, little kids will find this to be a stupid app because it doesn't let them draw in color like all the random whiteboard apps they could be using instead. As a parent, I let my 2 year old draw on my iPhone and her iPhone (a disused first gen) with "Whiteboard" because I happen to have it and she loves drawing random lines then asking for the color to be changed. First thing she would do in this app is just that, ask for a new color.

Simulating an old, outdated toy is fine but I sure hope they don't expect to actually sell it. I'd buy Brushes to entertain my 2 year old before I'd consider this.

So how much does a simple, silly app like this on the iPad cost? Free? .99? 4.99?

Why are people always SO cranky and negative here? It's like you come here with the sole intention of ripping on the writers.

You miss the point. Sure you can buy one of those crappy pieces of plastic and drag it around, but as a parent, you can't carry all of those tons of different toys around with you everywhere you go. With the iPad you can have lots of games all in the footprint of one flat tablet. Do you want to be carrying a whole toy box of activities into a restaurant, the car, etc. everytime? No. This is a way to keep the kids entertained and happily distracted for a bit, no matter where you are.

Please, stop being so negative and mean to the people that share information with us.

Very dumb app! Same goes to the atricle! Do we expect to get a "news" for every single app the comes to the iPad? I mean the dPad app atricle was already very boring (an app where most of the features are "promised" *rolleyes*) and now that! My daugther has on of those toys and it probably much more fun that doing that on my iPad (once it's here :) ).

Or do you get money to advertise shitty apps?

Isn't the idea of magnet draw pad to make a cheap tablet drawing device for kids? Now you have a iPad trying to be cheap magnet drawing pad trying to be a tablet. WTF? Other than the visual effect of the hexagon patterns, this is kinda stupid.

As far as Apple news go, shall we agree that this one was a rather ... minor one? *rolls eyes*
