Track an iPad from Shenzhen to you
There's a fun post at Silicon Alley Insider today that traces an iPad's journey from China to the customer's home. By monitoring Twitter and tracking reports, Nick Saint has assembled an iPad's typical journey to the US.It starts at the infamous Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China. That's the "iPad nursery," if you will. From there, iPads destined for the USA fly to Anchorage, Alaska, a journey that Google Maps struggled with (38 days by car? Oh, it'd be much shorter by car).
From there, the iPad that Nick was tracking went to Louisville, Kentucky, where it will remain (UPS shipping calls it "UPS Internal Activity") until it's set free on Saturday.
Many TUAW readers wrote in to say they've received shipment notifications, so we can assume that your precious is somewhere along this route. In the meantime, why not install a package tracking app on your iPhone (you remember your iPhone, right)?

Agreed that Apple put on a bad show. While I have many Apple products, this was the first, and the last, that I will be ordering from the online store. Their support was nonexistent, and sometimes even refrained from answering my questions until they ensured that yes, I knew Apple Care was available and yes, I ordered a case and no, I don't want to buy a second charger! Next time, I will brave the douche businessmen and doting parents and stand in line at a brick and mortar Apple store. The Apple reps at the stores are so much nicer - they realize that for some people, this isn't their first rodeo, as it were. Bad show Apple, better luck next time!

does anyones Status say this : Billing Information Received i don't get it i got my shipping confirmation email 3-30-10 at 8:37 pm pacific time and as of 3-31-10 10:59 pm it says Billing Information Received im scared my order is screwed up leave to apple do something like this them and there mysterious ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First: I just hung up with UPS, they said Apple contracted World Express service and ALL iPad's will be delivered on Saturday regardless if your area specifically has Saturday service. Now I live in Phoenix, big city, so I can assume I am safe to believe UPS.
Second: Mine also "back tracked" said China on Monday, Kentucky (no Alaska) on Tuesday, and now today (Wed) back in China. I inquired and UPS said that Apple sent the customs paperwork ahead for clearing so in reality I was tracking the paperwork until it officially "clears". So mine has cleared and I should expect to see movement of my iPad starting tomorrow. Good to know...
On a humorous note, I was the fifth caller in a row asking about my iPad, I apologized for drinking the kool-aid! ;-)
@Caria thanks for the follow-up with UPS there. It's reassuring and makes sense ... A bit. Can't understand why they chose to display it that way, though.

I have order before worldwide and I know ups keeps on updating the info...
May be big boss wants UPS to hold the tracking even.
What you think Guys!!!!
According to the UPS tracking for my iPad, it also is still in China. Hoping it will make its way in time. I am a bit worried that I won't get it until Monday, since I live in a fairly small city in podunk Wisconsin. Lord help us.

March 31 2010 at 6:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne can assume Apple contracted UPS for all deliveries of the iPad since that is all the news we've heard regarding deliveries. UPS does Saturday deliveries in most communities I would think. Maybe if you are in a small town, or out in the country, away from the distribution center they wouldn't do it...
March 31 2010 at 3:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat Google Maps link in the article is worth a closer look. Specifically, for instance, step 88 to get from Japan to Hawaii ('Kayak across the Pacific Ocean -- 6,243km') and step 102 to get from Hawaii to Seattle ('Kayak across the Pacific Ocean -- 4,436km') both stand out; given that particular step, I think 38 days might almost be optimistic. ;)
(To my amusement, the exit point in Seattle before continuing on to Alaska is right near my house -- and, more relevantly, the Google offices here where the Maps team is based.)
Yeah, I noticed that too. I was wondering how google could even calculate driving directions, but that was pretty funny.
March 31 2010 at 3:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHeh, Google Map'ing a route between continents is amusing. Once for kicks I plotted a route from New York to London. It had me driving down to some beach somewhere, then "Swim across the Atlantic Ocean..." Rrrrrrrright.
"...Louisville, Kentucky, where it will remain (UPS shipping calls it "UPS Internal Activity") until it's set free on Saturday."
Hopefully by Saturday it will be "a little bit" closer to my home than Kentucky, since I live in Texas. I would be hard to make than Saturday delivery to my house from Kentucky.
