Hulu coming to iPad... sometime, eventually

No date, no forecast, but it's a work in progress: in a story about the profit prospects for Hulu, the New York Times mentions that four sources familiar with the site's plans say there is a Hulu app in the works. This was rumored back in February, but the expectation was that the app would launch with the iPad... doesn't look like it will, at this point.

The possibility mentioned is that the app will come along with some sort of subscription plan for television content, which would be both irksome to existing Hulu fans who love the (free) website, and potentially get a scornful eyebrow from the App Store poobahs for stealing fire from the iTunes television show business.

We've been hoping for a Hulu app for the iPhone for a long time, but there's no discussion of that in the current NYT story. Shame, too, as it was supposedly coming "within a few months" just about a year ago.

Not that I care since I don't live in the US but anyone who doubts that this is going to happen is clearly nuts. If the iPad does indeed sell as well over the next couple of months as we think it is going to (brace yourself for the Christmas period) then I suspect whoever has been tasked with bringing Hulu to the iPad/iPhone will find that a rocket has been placed up their backside to get the service out soon.

As I have said before, content providers need us more than we need them. Put another way, "if Mohammed will not go to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammed". And here it comes now.

Personally, I don't mind the Ads, not one bit. Give me good enough content, I'll "pay" my dues. What's the issue with ad revenue for sites like Hulu, are they not generating enough income? Compared to televisions declining viewer base ( an assumption really, I haven't had cable in over 2 years but am an active Netflix & Hulu viewer.) there has to be some sort of equilibrium in terms of revenue.

i would actually be OK paying for it on the iPad, though not on my computer, if they removed the ads.

It would really be great if we had the option of ad based vs subscription based.

Interestingly, Apple holds a patent on dynamic ad serving being used to 'buy ahead' sections of video content.
