Official Netflix app will stream to iPad

Many iPad owners will use their devices to watch television shows and movies. Netflix and ABC want to make that easy with their official iPad apps. And no, this is not an April Fools prank.

Appadvice has posted screenshots and details of how the subscription will work. The app will be free and available at launch on April 3rd, allowing Netflix customers to stream video directly to their iPads. The nice thing is that you can watch a bit of a movie on your computer, and then pick up where you left off on your iPad (and vice versa). You'll also be able to browse and manage your queue from the app.

US television network ABC is also offering an app. This free app gives customers Wi-Fi access to some of their most popular shows, like Lost and Grey's Anatomy. You can even browse the network's weekly and monthly schedule to find just the show you're after.

We've been expecting Netflix to offer something for a while, and the ABC app isn't entirely unexpected either, as the network 's corporate parent's biggest stockholder is someone we all know.

Now if only Hulu would pull the trigger.

For some reason this comment system keeps reposting one comment I made months ago for my initial reply no matter what I type.

I was trying to post that I can confirmed this, it's in the app store.

No, people with dates are saying it too. For example, my wife and I agree on our feelings : lame.

You mean like how they use Silverlight on the PS3?
When Netflix wants to be on a platform they use whatever they can to get on it.
FYI Netflix on the PS3 uses BD-Live to handle its streaming.

Never.. hulu will never be on ipad.. it's not on PS3 anymore because of licensing conflicts with the ps3 download store.. pay attention people.. netflix is a totally different situation, it's a rental/subscription service. Flash isn't keeping hulu from ipad, hulu is keeping hulu from ipad.. (or rather, their sponsors/content providers)

I'm inclined to think this is another April Fool's prank. There's no mention of the iPad at all on the Netflix site. If this was a real app, they'd be trumpeting it like mad (and so would Apple, for that matter: how many iPads would they sell just on the basis of Netflix streaming?).

You really need to confirm this with Netflix before saying it is not a joke. I am a developer and can upload any screenshots to Apple servers for no real app.

Look, it's Hulu for iPad: http://a1.phobos.apple.com/us/r30/Purple/a8/ed/b8/mzl.ipqcqfya.png?downloadKey=1270734588_52f123ee937225770575d9008a216b9f

Netflix has not issued a press release, and that seems pretty unusual for such big news, given that they've announced every other platform support before.

C'mon TUAW ... get some real confirmation before joining in on the joke ;)

Wow, I had no idea screenshots could be uploaded that easy. I guess this could be a joke.

TUAW, let's get some extra verification on this. This is not the day to screw around with real product announcements.

No joke. The images are on Apple's servers. Where's my iPhone version?
