Twenty iPad apps you'll want to see

The App Store is live and running with iPad apps right now -- you can download and buy any iPad apps you want, even though most of them are technically "embargoed" until tomorrow morning. There's a lot of amazing stuff out there, but we'll try to focus you as best we can. Here's twenty apps that you won't want to miss in the App Store -- even if you don't buy them for iPad this weekend, you should at least check out the info and screenshots that are now available.
There's more -- much more, and obviously we'll be seeing lots and lots of new titles in the very exciting days to come. But the magical revolution that we've been hearing about for months has begun. When the iPad releases on Saturday, there'll be no shortage of great software to run and browse and play with on it.

Update: Netflix's app is live as well, as is NetNewsWire for iPad, Galcon Fusion, Articles, and Twittelator Pad. Too many good apps!

Even though I don't even want an iPad, I got Twitterrific for iPad for experimentation purposes. I replaced the payload, iTunes Metadata and iTunesArtwork files from the iPhone version of Twitterrific on my iPod with the same files from the iPad version. The icon did indeed change on my Home Screen to the new silver icon, but the app didn't run (or even show the usual default.png startup screen). Apparently, from what I saw inside the .app bundle, iPad apps have two different default images (startup-landscape.png and startup-portrait.png) as opposed to the single image for iPhone apps (default.png).

If you want to dig around for yourself, just download an app from the App Store, put it on your desktop, change the extension from .ipa to .zip and open the zip file. There are all your files from the app!

After digging around in some other apps, it looks like I was wrong about the iPad filenames. They're default-landscape.png and default-portrait.png, not startup.

ABC has an app. Stream free episodes! This + Netflix is only the beginning...

WiFi only, like Netflix, but still, it's all coming together.

I will second for already mentioned here myPhoneDesktop: http://bit.ly/am4Abi especially because it will allow my secretary to send me office related info directly to my iPad (text, images, notes, urls, what ever...). I used to be with Pastebot, but found myPhoneDesktop a bit more powerful and flexible for what I need (mutliplatform and web-client support). One main difference between Pastebot and myPhoneDesktop is Pastebot sends content (clipboard) while myPhoneDesktop process data (action) in addition of sending me data. Oh yeah, and it works regardless if one on wi-fi or cellular network. Love it.

Alright, well, seeing as other people seem to be adding things to the list, and as I have spent the past week sleeplessly laboring over my own shiny new iPad app, forgive me, but now seems to be the perfect time for a shameless plug! :)

My pride and joy, reason-that-I-wake-up-in-the-morning, first born iPad app is a unique strategic card game called Five Square. Here's a link to the iTunes Store page: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/five-square-hd/id364907139?mt=8 The actual concept of the game is quite simple: a 5 by 5 grid of cards is dealt out, and the cards must all be moved into one stack by placing cards onto other cards of the same suit or value in the same row or column. It's a very simple game, and yet, winning it requires an amount of strategy you just don't see in most other card games. It's great if you're tired of card games that are based mostly upon luck, and you like games like Freecell that actually require some thought. ;)

We released an iPhone version of the app a few months ago (we're working on a web demo of it over at www.fivesquareapp.com/new, soon to be at www.fivesquareapp.com), and despite our many attempts at marketing, sales never took off. We really tried to get an independent review of the app on several different sites (here included), and while we've definitely seen interest in the app, none of the reviewers have had the time to review yet another iPhone game with all the iPad hype going on.

It is my sincere hope that the iPad app will see much more success than the iPhone app ever did, and I think we have a shot at this considering it's on the app store now, with far fewer iPad apps than were there on the iPhone app store when we released Five Square initially. I'll try again to get it reviewed, but for now the least I can ask is to have it added to the list. Thanks! :)

I'd also add myPhoneDesktop to the list! http://bit.ly/am4Abi
Very cool and feature-full app with a lot of potentials. Because it provides multi-OS support (win, Mac, Linux) + web, this Saturday as soon I as get my new shiny iPad I will be able to send pictures, text, etc from all of my home and work systems to my iPad.

Doesn't look like they are live yet but for fans of comic books and graphic novels PanelFly looks like a killer app (on the iPad at least the iPhone version isn't all that on such a small screen).

P.S. I really wish there was a web version of Words With Friends.
