1Password for iPad will be free upgrade from iPhone version
Agile Web Solutions, the company behind 1Password, has laid out what I have seen as the most sensible model so far for pricing on iPad apps. They announced on their blog how the new apps will work: They are selling 1Password for iPad for $6.99 and it is aimed at people who do not and will not own the iPhone/iPod touch versions. This version will be all iPad, all the time.If you have an iPad and an iPhone/iPod touch, you can pick up 1Password Pro right now for $8.99 (it's on sale right now, the price will eventually go up to $14.99) and later on, this version will also include other features that won't make it to the standard version (one in particular they mention is MobileMe syncing).
I'm happy to read anything about iPhone and iPad app development, and I like hearing that someone has given thought to, and made allowances for, both types of iPad users (those who own an iPhone or iPod touch, and those who don't). I also like their transparency in letting people know how the upgrade path will go.
I'm still wondering about pricing in the App Store for iPad apps, and how peacefully all of this will end up coexisting. There's nothing to do but wait and see how things actually shake out with real users and actual app purchases, but I'm hoping there's more thoughtful examination and graceful upgrading out there. Knowing that consumers can be, shall we say, less than kind about things like pricing and upgrades, I'm hoping Agile will get credit for having spent some time on making this easier on people.

I agree with some of the other posters - change the title of this article. It's misleading and only serves to confuse customers.

Unfortunately, the headline implies that if you own the iphone version you'll get the ipad version free. The article does nothing to state that isn't the case.
This is just sloppy. All they had to do was stick "Pro" in the headline.
While the article was pretty clear on things, I agree the headline was confusing to some folks (if they didn't bother to read the accompanying article).

By offering three versions (a cheap iPhone-only version, an expensive universal version, and a cheap iPad version), they give consumers all the options they could want. Only have an iPad? Don't pay 14.99, just pay 6.99. I hope that other developers learn from this example.
What I would suggest to Agile, though, and anyone else who takes this approach: it would really be smart if the App Store description clearly stated this. I've been on the fence about buying the iPad version because I thought I would need it. Clearly others here have already taken the plunge and now have buyer's remorse. This problem could have been averted with a simple sentence or two in the description.
I think you goofed big time with the headline. As far as I can tell, if you currently own 1Password Pro, you'll get a free update that supports both iPhone and iPad natively. If you currently own 1Password (not pro) for the iPhone it looks like you do NOT get a free upgrade to the iPad version. At least not that they mention anywhere on their blog.
You may want to actually speak so someone to clarify before you make a statement like this based on, from what I can see, no supporting evidence
I just read the TUAW post and It seemed to me, that is exactly what the post said. If you have the Pro version then you get an included upgrade to the iPad version. If not, you buy an iPad only version. Perhaps they clarified the post after your comment.
The "supporting evidence" appears to come directly from the 1Password blog. Again, perhaps the TUAW post was updated after your comment, that might explain the initial confusion.
So does any one else see something here - buy the cheaper iPhone app and you get the iPad app free?
April 02 2010 at 8:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHeaded to iTunes to see if I can get a refund as well. One of the few apps I was willing to pay for again and it turns out I don't have to. I don't understand why they created the iPad version which will only create confusion.

April 02 2010 at 8:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor the most part, I'm not duplicating apps that I already have on my phone, but this one was an exception.
Right after I posted here, I used the "Report a Problem" feature in iTunes to request a refund. If I don't get it, I won't be broken hearted, I can spare the couple of bucks it cost, I just found it a little annoying.
@Kelly I just feel like TUAW should have included that explanation in the blog post. It seems to make the title more true or holding to its title. And while it would not have saved Jeffrey in this case, it does help to include in the post that the "'1Password Pro app is awaiting approval' says Agiles website"
@Jeffrey try and contact Apple. They might be able to do something about it. The only reason I am not buying apps, like 1Password, for the iPad is simply that reason. I see most of them updating for iPad compatibility.
1Password wrote a whole new interface for the iPad version, but if you own the Pro one, the update is universal binary so you are fine. It will have the iPad customizations when you install it on the iPad.
April 02 2010 at 7:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySounds to me like I may have gotten shafted on this one. I purchased 1 Password Pro for my iPhone a couple of days ago, and as of right now (I checked for updates) it is still being listed as an iPhone only app in iTunes. However, only moments before reading this article, I also purchased 1 Password for the iPad. So it looks like I paid twice and I doubt there is anything I can do about it.
April 02 2010 at 7:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyClick on your account name in the upper right of iTunes, click on order history. Find the order that iPassword for iPad was in, click on "Report a Problem". I believe there is a "Request a refund" button. Takes about 48 hours.

I did this, but there was no Request Refund option that I saw. Just an FYI.
