Letterman's iPad top ten list doesn't go quite according to plan

Sure, David Letterman is rich, famous and apparently no slouch with the ladies... but he's not an iPad-savvy geek, as you can see here.

During tonight's Late Show, he brought out an iPad with the top ten list shown ("Top Ten Questions To Ask Yourself Before Waiting In Line For The iPad") -- then proceeded to turn the iPad upside down, get frustrated with his inability to wake it from sleep mode, accidentally try to power it down, lick it (!), then he simply went ahead and read from his paper card.

It's not clear how much of Letterman's frustration was feigned for comic effect, but it was a bit painful to see guest Sam Worthington place his coffee cup atop the iPad screen a few minutes later.

Meanwhile, over on basic cable, Stephen Colbert showed the world how it's done (via Gawker). In addition to slicing veggies for a tangy salsa with his iPad, Colbert also got in a nice dig: "If you've already got an iPhone, a lot will be familiar to you on the iPad. The same touchscreen technology, the same apps... and just like the iPhone, you can't make calls with it." Oooh, burn. Update: Colbert video now embedded in the 2nd half of the post along with Letterman.

Actually, Colbert has a point. I've had an iPhone 3G for over 18 months now, and although it's a great little hand-held computer, it truly sucks as a phone. Mostly making calls is fine, but answering one is still a 50/50 proposition. Whoever decided that a rendered slider is a good way to answer a call deserves your last president.

To be fair whilst Letterman turned it off when rotating it by putting it down on the off button, so did the guy from engadget on Fallon, although he realised he had and new how to turn it on again.

I love how they both kept tapping it on the desk like they were straightening a stack of papers.

Embedding flash vids on your site is USELESS to those of us using an iPhone. Maybe it's just me, but it seems obvious that a lot of iPhone users might visit TUAW . . .duh!

Ummm did anyone happen to notice on the letterman clip the camera hole at the top of the iPad? It's visible from the lights glaring on it @ 42-44 sec... it's so crazy that no one is mentioning this, did they pull the camera but leave the case design untouched? Are all the reviewers colluding for a big "One more thing..." under threat that revealing it early they will have their iPad repossessed by Apple? What else could the hole be for?!

Nobody is mentioning it because you're the only one who mistook a fingerprint for a camera...

Well Tucker, no need to get snitty, just look at the footage. Sure doesn't look like a fingerprint to me!

Here I made a post just for you:

It certainly explains Apples "fear of buttons"....

There is one button on the front of the iPad, and Letterman managers to mess it up :)

Not gonna lie - I had flashbacks of my grandmother attempting to set her VCR to record during this.

Pretty obvious he knew what he was doing. Without fail, he kept turning it upside down so it would turn off.

Its pretty clear what happened: he hit the sleep button on the desk when he turned it upside down. I suspect it was unplanned, so he just ad-libbed the rest.

If you watch the full video he does it countless times. I doubt the live show was the first time he handled it.

There's a home button at the bottom of the screen, just like the iPhone. Dave is old but he's not *that* old. :D

"Letterman's style of comedy is not going to carry the water forever."

How long has he been around and still going strong?

Maybe you're the angry old man.

Yeah, Letterman is SOOO great that when Leno returned to the Tonight Show, despite all the bad press he got from the way NBC handled the whole mess, he started clobering Letterman in the ratings again. If I wanted to watch a bitter, mean-spirited perverted old man, well heck, why would I want to do that??

Well that reply wasn't very pertinent to my question. Good try though.
