Gmail HTML5-optimized for the iPad
Google announced yesterday that they've optimized the Gmail web app for the iPad. The new user interface for the iPad is built on the Gmail for mobile HTML5 web application and brings Gmail a two-pane view with your list of conversations on the left and your messages to the right. While the two-pane view is nothing groundbreaking, it is a welcome improvement -- and something MobileMe has had on the desktop since it launched. One can only hope they bring this two-pane functionality to the standard desktop-based Gmail web app.
An interesting note: in the screen shot above (seen larger here) the email account displayed is i.love.html5@gmail.com. Don't we all?

When in the Hell is some kind of flash player going to be downloaded into the iPhone to allow downloads of clips movies etc. You have a lot of unhappy consumers that were misled into thinking this could be done. Sure we can access sites where they are offered but we cannot download without flash player. The poor suckers who are buying the ipad are finding the same problem. Apple is playing control freak with the public. Buy another product instead of apple. iPhones also have server and wifi problems. At@t is also a problem in getting area coverage. When you allow apple iPhones through verizon in the future, will current AT&T customers be able to switch to verizon without paying $175 cancellation fee to AT&T????so we can get better area coverage???What a MESS!

I've tried the mobile version and the desktop version (using the links at the bottom of the screen to toggle between the two).

April 11 2010 at 3:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah. I had someone else w/ a gmail account log in and it showed the nice 2 column format. Then when they logged out and I back in it showed up for me. The only downside I can see with this format is that most HTML emails don't allow you to scroll down within the right frame to see below the visible fold.
April 11 2010 at 4:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHopefully, this helps people to realize why the fact that it's "just a big iPod Touch" is the whole point. Having a huge screenâwhile retaining the simplicity of the iPod Touch's OS X Mobile user experienceâlends the iPad tremendous UI flexibility compared to its pint-size brethren.
"Oh, it's just a big iPod Touch." Exactly. Yes, it is. And that is awesome. And if you can't figure out why that is awesome, hopefully it will become clear in the coming weeks. If you still can't understand how the iPad legitimizes the entire tablet market, then by all means, enjoy your HP Slate, or what have you.
Very well said. The iPod Touch is one of the sweetest pieces of tech I've ever owned, and a version of that with much more screen real estate sounds like an absolute dream to me.

Dude. Michael. FIXED POSITIONING. This is the first time any mainstream web developer has implemented a multi-pane fixed-position web layout for an iPhone OS device.
Lots of us little shops have worked up hacks to make it happen (and honestly, some of ours function a little nicer than Google's), but this is the first major web app to get pseudo-fixed-positioning on iPhone OS.
Now, they just need to get the sync working so I can sync my google calendars on iPad. Right now the www.google.com/sync says it is not supported by the iPad browser! Major bummer, as I don't want to go to mobile me for my calendars.
Any ideas.....
Now I need them to do the same thing to Google Reader.

April 03 2010 at 10:58 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySupposedly not just gmail, but the other apps as well. Here I asked about the Google Reader and got an "already done" message back...

You can also spoof your user agent to make it look like an iPad. If you know how to do that, here's the iPad's user agent:
Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10
If you don't, a quick Google search should turn answers up.
So how do we get this to be a permanent menu item in Safari? Or can we use it once then bookmark the webpages so they go to the iPad designed interface instead of the standard desktop one?
