Adobe releases Adobe Ideas for iPad

Just because Adobe can't have Flash on the iPad doesn't mean that they want to miss out on the Apple tablet bandwagon. Adobe has released a pretty cool app called Adobe Ideas. Adobe Ideas is a sketchbook for the iPad. The app features vector-based drawing tools, zoom control, sizable brushes, layers, and the ability to email PDF documents for editing in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

While Adobe Ideas isn't as feature-rich as Brushes for iPad, it is a free app that starving artists will appreciate (though, if you've bought an iPad, I don't think you technically count as a "starving" artist). Brushes for iPhone was used by Jorge Colombo to paint a cover of The New Yorker.

It's going to be cool to see how artists start embracing the iPad and its larger screen with apps like these. Picasso may have had his Moleskine (may have), but the next great artists might just be sketching their budding visions on the iPad.

I love Adobe Ideas on my iPad. It is a great drawing application, plus it is free, which makes it a must download. Give it a serious try – I actually discover this app while looking on it more in depth while writing this review, and this is, now, one of my favorite apps! And don’t forget to zoom, while you are sketching, which for me was the key of success.
I have posted a full review on my blog:

I think its really going to help the ipad that they have a partner ship with adobe. At least they have some relevant software on this not otherwise terribly functional piece of technology.

I spent the weekend completely addicted to this awesome app. In fact, we had to limit every family member's time since we each wanted to use Adobe Ideas. Especially transforming photos into cool works of art. All I can think about is drawing and painting on all my favorite photos, removing the photo layer and appreciating the results. It makes us each feel like a talented artist.

I prefer Sketchbook. It's much more full-featured than either of the apps mentioned.

I don't know how Adobe Ideas got past the App Store reviewers.

The user interface is really bad. And it is slow! Drag your finger to draw and the line shows up about an inch behind your finger. YUCK!

You probably had a very large brush enabled. It wasn't lagging at all but brushing that far behind your finger. I tried this app out and found it to be surprising for such a basic little app. I was able to create this goofy bunny with it, in fact: http://www.twitpic.com/1d7xg0

My issue with it was really that it doesn't show you what size brush you have enabled - there's literally no way to grasp what size you're using on screen. 10 pixels is . . . what? . . . when you're zoomed way in. In that respect, it's a bad interfact. I think Adobe just wanted to have something "new" available for the Ipad. For a simple sketching program, I can't complain too much, but it won't get a lot of usage from me since Sketchbook Pro obviously blows it away.

It let's you draw, it's very simple and you probably won't get any work done with it but it's more fun than idea pad

I agree with Hal, makes me shiver to think what the upgrade will cost. And there are fabulous art apps besides Brushes out there... SketchBook Pro, Art Studio are FABULOUS on the iPad.

If the policy holds that's in place for the iPhone, then the upgrades for a free app will also be free.
They could introduce a pay version, but it would appear that the free version would remain free with respect to upgrades.

I don't know if it's a smart business move to develop for a platform trying to kill your stranglehold on interactive online media, but it's definitely worth some brownie points when you do it for free.
