Some iPad owners experience Wi-Fi connection issues
Many iPad customers spent the weekend playing with their new devices, and several reported iffy Wi-Fi performance. One thread on Apple's Discussion Boards describes a weak or inconsistent signal. "My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location," writes user Andrew79. Another user writes, "Even when standing in front of the wlan router the signal fluctuates from strong to very weak."
I've experienced this myself. However, when my iPad's signal strength indicator fluctuated between one bar and four, it never lost a connection. So I'm inclined to believe that it's reporting the signal strength incorrectly, not actually dropping off and on.
Users in another thread report that their iPads connect, but can't get an address to get out to the net. " My iPad connects to my wifi without a problem," one user writes, "but the only site I can visit is my access point's web interface. I can't even get to my router's interface from the iPad. All my other devices (touch, laptops, Roku) can access the Internet without a problem."
I haven't had this particular issue. If you're having trouble, consult the iPad User Guide [PDF]. Specifically page 117. Otherwise, sound off in the comments and Discussion Boards.

Trouble, trouble, and more trouble. My connection is erratic to say the least. The bars jump from full to one dot all the time. I have had about 1 half of an hour where I was surfing and downloading like a mad man, but the rest of the time it has been stupid slow! For example when I could connect well, I downloaded some books (took about 3 seconds for a book) when I was having problems, it took about 5-7 minutes to download a book. I have played with my router (to no avail) I have reset the router, the network connection on the ipad several times as well. It works when it wants to, but only when it wants to. Now my son bought a 16 gig model and he is not having this issue. Quite frustrating to say the least. I certainly hope that it is a quick software fix. Today or tomorrow I plan on chatting with Cisco to see if there is any settings I can change in my router to fix it, but I do believe that it is a problem with the software on the Ipad. Bummer.

April 05 2010 at 8:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy iPad WiFi issues appear to have been solved by doing a clean restore (no backups) to the original 3.2 FW. (you can download it here http://tinyurl.com/yfavzn5)
I suggest anyone having issues give this a try.
I have noticed that wifi signal is not as strong as my MBP or Iphone. Hopefully it's something that they can fix with a firmware update.
April 05 2010 at 3:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCan't wait to see a user calling Leo on the weekend to ask why his/her iPad won't connect to the Linksys.
April 05 2010 at 2:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple Support suggested an iPad Network settings reset - and it did the trick. They also said that a hard restore would be the next step and that solved most peoples similar problems.
I am now getting full strength wifi all through the house with no erratic signal strength.
I've lost connection a few times. This is on my 5ghz N network. I connected to my 2.4Ghz G network and it works just fine. I'd say the problem is 5Ghz and/or N related.
Has anyone had any luck tethering it to their iPhone? I don't see the need in paying for mobile data traffic on two devices that do the same thing with different screen resolutions.
April 05 2010 at 2:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just did this today finally. Worked like a charm, used MiWi, jailbroken 3gs. Sorry Steve, there will be tethering and we don't even NEED to jb the ipad.
April 05 2010 at 7:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replymy ipad keeps disconnecting from wifi everytime the display goes to sleep. It is really annoying because it doesnt automatically reconnect, i have to go back into the settings to get it to reconnect

I have had the same issues but after reading everything - i tried changing my time capsule radio to force g mode only. instant fix for me - for 2 hours still.
near end of page six is where i i started posting about this but it was from the advice of an earlier post. prior to doing anything - i've been doing systematic tests from the same location with many apple devices on wifi to compare ipad's poor speed and oscillating signal. i recommend speedtest.net iphone app to test on both devices since most speed tests online require flash. the other way i tested was to download identical free tv shows from itunes.
