Why I didn't buy an iPad

Guest blogger B. Imei Hsu lays out the case over on Chris Pirillo's blog for "Why you don't want an iPad" -- she takes a few guesses at why you, dear Apple fan, may not have bought Apple's magical and revolutionary device this past weekend. She's actually a little venomous -- not only is there a bit of harsh language in there, but according to her, you're probably in denial or clueless about what the iPad actually is. Thanks for that, Ms. Hsu.

Fortunately, I'm in a good position to answer this one -- I'm a lead editor on a major (unofficial) Apple weblog, and no, I didn't buy an iPad. Why not? Not because of any of the iPad's faults -- I got to play with one for an extended amount of time at an Apple Store on Saturday (there was a line building up behind me, and the Geniuses were starting to give me weird looks), and I think it's an amazing device. It feels solid and perfect, it runs even faster than I expected, and that display is just terrific. It makes apps, e-books, and the web look beautiful, and save for a few quirks with the keyboard (I often lay my fingers on the keys while thinking of what to write, and you can't have any stray touches on the iPad's keyboard), I think it's just as amazing as promised.

But I don't have "a problem with desire," I'm not asking "the wrong questions," I don't "hate change," and I'm not envious. Ok, maybe I am a little envious, but not by choice at all. Honestly, I didn't buy an iPad this weekend because so far, I just don't need one.

Yes, I'm one of those people. I just bought a MacBook last year, and it's the computer that I use around the house when I should be using an iPad -- I've got a comic book reader loaded on it with a bunch of digital comics, and I even watch streaming video and browse the web when I need a little extra distraction from whatever I'm doing on the big TV. I've got my trusty iPhone to play touch apps, and while yes, I realize that the iPad experience is different, if only for the bigger screen, I made the (tough) decision last weekend to wait. There are places in my life that would be improved by having an iPad around (I really want an e-reader, but I bought a US$7.99 paperback this weekend rather than a $500 iPad and a $9.99 digital copy), but not enough to justify the purchase at the moment, especially with the tax check having just gone out.

Will I buy an iPad eventually? Of course -- I am in the "revolution" camp, in that I'm pretty sure in just a few years we'll all be using iPad-like computers while out and about. And I have no ill will towards people who bought an iPad this weekend and are excited about it -- I think it's a great device, and for the money, you couldn't buy a better personal portable computer. But with all of the ones I've already got sitting around the house, I just don't need another one right now.

Dear Mr. Schramm,
As an admitted "n00b to Social Media" and a "neek" (hybrid nerd+geek), I was pleased that you took a brief look at my opinion piece. I've only been writing to the public with any engagement of this field for 6 months. It's so new, it wouldn't even be fair to call myself a blogger. I'm just a woman with a few thoughts to share.

I'm a bit puzzled at this part of your response:

"...she takes a few guesses at why you, dear Apple fan, may not have bought Apple's magical and revolutionary device this past weekend. She's actually a little venomous...".

A number of the comments on your response indicate that they understood my opinion piece to be what I intended: a commentary on why people make "snap judgments" (about anything, not just the iPad) and are hasty to put those thoughts in print without substantiation. If you take another look at the post, you'll see that I have neither venom (if you knew me, you would be chuckling about that one by now), nor did I try to take guesses as to why people didn't buy an iPad. Again, I was laying out my theories as to the behavior of airing hasty judgments.

I also wasn't writing to only the Apple fan. The content that has been crossing my desk on the subject have been across the board. There wasn't a specific demographic I was writing to, with the exception of my mother's generation. In an earlier piece, I explained to my readers that my parents opened one of the first PC learning and repair centers in the Seattle area many years ago, and they are not likely to purchase Apple products of any kind. However, the iPad might be the kind of "gamechanger" that might help someone like my mother see the possibility of crossing over to a different OS. If there was any 1st reader I may have been writing to, it would have been my Mom (everybody say "awww, how sweet").

I really enjoyed hearing why you aren't buying an iPad, and how you substantiated those reasons. I see too many written statements peppered only with adjectives untethered from logic. Your tenants as to why you wouldn't be buying one now are clearly stated. That's definitely the kind of writing this reader appreciates. :)

Thank you for reading my opinion piece, and thanks for reading my comment.

To the other readers with comments: my thanks to those who read my post thoroughly, connected with my message, and will therefore go ye into the world and doeth good things! You rawk!

Warmly,
Imei

Thank you for summing up EXACTLY what my thoughts were regarding the iPad. I too have been asked this all week and yes. I think the main reason i didnt rush to buy one is that i bought a kindle in december, which yes, pails in comparison to the iPad. But i needed a good ebook reader for a series of trips around xmas, and the kindle was it at the time. I will say, i too will probably buy one, but for now, i'm content with my 1yr old MBP

Does no one want to use the "I'm waiting for 3G" excuse like me?

I'm sick and tired of all of the iPad bashing articles. They all bitch and whine about the exact same things. Why do you have to dig them up here constantly? Who cares what these whiners think?

I will get an iPad once my 1.5 year old MacBook becomes unusable. Yes, the iPad can't do everything a MacBook can do, but I'm not doing everything I could be doing on the MacBook either! I'm websurfing and emailing. So instead of upgrading my laptop, like I would normally do, I'll actually be saving money by buying an iPad, which has the functionality I need and no more. It makes more sense for me to have ONE powerful computer that can do anything (an iMac) and a couple of different devices that are slaves to the master: an iPad (for trips, bedroom/living room browsing) and an iPod Touch (for everyday mobile usage when I don't want to carry an iPad around.) Why would I need two computers running full fledged Mac OS X (a desktop and a laptop)? The iPad solves that too-much-computing-power problem for me. But yeah, not getting one until the laptop conks out.

I have a 3 year old MBP pro that I am hoping to leave in the office for video and audio editing. I plan on using my iPad for 90% of my work I do especially with the ability to connect to a keyboard. Having used one since Saturday, I see no reason to change my mind on this. An iPad is right for me now. If I had a new machine I might be less likely to have purchased so quickly. I do like the relative lightness and mobility of it. I am looking forward to being able to travel with it instead of my laptop which I never felt comfortable to carrying around when I had to visit different school sites for my job. I guess it all depends on what you need to use for. I am amused with all the hate spewing out that I am seeing about it in the comments of some some blogs and news sources. Once Google steps up with Docs editing integration this will be even more useful, as will some apps that will allow you to do some basic handwriting and sketch with typed text. Evernote is talking about integrating this which would be great as their iPad app is really nice.

What a pointless stupid article. You're "feeding the trolls" and insulting your readers intelligence at the same time. Keep it on your tweets ok?

Mike Schramm said: "if anyone needs any iPad-related fiction, I'd be happy to put down a few thousand words for, say, $499".

No takers then?
