iPads selling on eBay for as much as $5000

In an email to Bloomberg, eBay stated that almost 80 percent of iPad purchases came from outside the U.S. and that the average selling price for an iPad was $777 during the week leading up to Saturday's launch.

If that money tree in your back yard is doing so well that you can spend ten times what a iPad normal costs to get it a few weeks early, great for you. Just remember though, if you want to pay outrageous sums for an iPad, there are other ways to do it.

That's dumb. The Apple Store at the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose had them in stock yesterday when I went by to look at some cables for my iMac, and that was fairly late in the day.

For 5 grand I'd just take a trip and pick one up in NY or something.

I'm in a holding pattern waiting for my 3G model. I have to tell you though...seeing "late April" as the expected delivery date is starting to get old.

Give us a release date already! 3 weeks lead time is plenty of lead time to know when it will be shipped.

There are/were quite a few iPads listed on eBay-UK, but none have sold for more than a £1000 ($1500), so someone paying $5000 for one off the US site must be fracking brain-dead.

What I have found is that there are people who bid £2000 - £5000 for something worth far less than £1000, and it turns out the bidder was trying to pull a scam -- there are loads of these bogus bidders on the UK site, and I'm sure the US and other eBay sites are not immune to this sort of thing.

look's like Nintendo rubbed off on Apple. first they released the i-pod touch, and now the new i-pod touch XL. oops i meant the i-pad, it's funny how companies sell you the same product time and time again with minor changes in hardware.

I don't consider an enormous jump in physical size (what is it, 5-600% larger at least?) to be a "minor change in hardware." I don't think Nintendo's new hardware had an increase anywhere near that size.

Of course it doesn't sound all that dumb if you're an internationally based developer that needs to test their application on real hardware - remember that these developers apps are already be in the app store and being used!

If there's an issue that arises in your app only on the actual hardware and you are already losing sales as a result of that issue, $5000 suddenly doesn't sound like idiocy.

I am in Bulgaria, and just purchased a 16GB iPad for 750$ (shipping included).
I just can't wait, as we need it for development purposes.

I decided that I wanted the 3G model instead. It appears I could get nearly all my money back selling my Wi-Fi model on eBay rather than eating the $90 restocking fee from Best Buy.

$90 'restocking' fee? That's the sign of a qualitiy retailer right there!
