Verizon CEO: We want the iPhone
Almost since the day it was revealed to the public, American customers have been clamoring for the iPhone to be made available on Verizon's network. Many potential iPhone buyers have cited their distaste for AT&T as their primary reason for not jumping on the iPhone train, and the chant has been relentless for almost three years now: "We want the iPhone on Verizon!"One more voice has joined that chorus: the CEO of Verizon, Ivan Seidenberg, told Apple outright that Verizon wants to carry the iPhone on its network. Nothing coy about it: if Apple will build it, Verizon will come. This is a complete 180 from Verizon's stance in 2005, when Verizon rejected Apple's iPhone offer, saying they couldn't come to a deal that was "mutually beneficial." Seidenberg reportedly brought up his overtures to Apple following the recent Wall Street Journal report on the forthcoming Verizon iPhone. This could mean a couple of things: either there's no Verizon deal yet and the Journal's report was premature speculation, or there is a deal in progress, but the final details have yet to be hammered out.
Verizon has very likely spent the past three years kicking itself over its rejection of the iPhone three years ago. Here's hoping a Verizon-Apple deal does eventually come to fruition. It would be a big win for both companies, but more importantly, it would be an even bigger win for US customers.

i am waiting for Verizon to pick up the Iphone. i have had sprint for years but wanted to change because of coverage. i was in the AT&T store, ready to purchase an iphone and a simpler one for hubby, and 2 for the kids and make the switch, but AT&T wanted a $500 deposit PER LINE on top of the cost of the phones i was about to purchase, that was a $2000 deposit that "i would get back in 13 months". i don't want an iphone THAT bad! i went to Verizon instead, no problems and have been happy with my blackberry, but really want an iphone. i will never go to AT&T and really hope these rumors are true!
April 12 2010 at 9:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was shocked when I got my iPhone to see how vastly improved AT&T's service compared to Verizon's. Both do drop calls, rarely. The biggest improvement was in clarity. In the 10 years I was with VZ, breakups, chopped conversations....jokingly referred to as 2/3rds of a word.... was normal. That simply does NOT happen with AT&T's service. Every conversation is complete and clear. Never thought it could or would happen. I use my cell more than my landline now.
For those who have complaints about AT&T, please understand they are actually doing something about it. They've done wonderfully well in upstate NY. They are building aggressively all over, especially in the big cities. Give it time, it will improve, and when it does it will be better than what VZ overcharges for.
Verizon's network might be larger, but I seriously doubt they have the backhaul capacity necessary to handle millions of high-data-usage iPhones being dropped on their network. For all the flack AT&T has taken over their network, I think they're doing a damn good job of handling the load. All of the Verizon fanboys and girls who are badmouthing the AT&T network (and I firmly believe the majority of them have never had a problem with AT&T and are just talking out their asses because it's the 'cool' thing to do - bash AT&T) will surely be crying about the Verizon network IF they ever get the iPhone.
To be sure though, there have been Verizon iPhone rumors for a long time now, and it has so far not come to fruition, and there's no real reason to believe it will. Hell, I'd put more faith in a T-Mobile iPhone rumor than a Verizon rumor.
No thanks, Verizon. I'll stick with my clearly inferior network rather than subject myself to your greedy culture of gotcha capitalism. Programming phones so any one of 3 button presses gets a $2 data charge and *then* billing me $2 for the message that says I don't have data service was proof enough that I needed to look elsewhere.
I have.
Well, one good thing that will arise from Apple / Verizon alliance is that AT&T will get to free up A LOT of bandwidth when so many of their customers leave! AT&T might be Sprint's record for losing so many customers in a quarter! Time will tell. Might as well say it now "poor AT&T".
April 07 2010 at 4:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would love to see a Verizon iPhone, even without the ability to do another task while I'm in the call. I had an iPhone for a year and a half through AT&T, but unfortunately, 3G is not available where I live, and I was having a lot of problems with dropped calls. If AT&T had better coverage, I'd go back to them, but since I currently get 3G at my house with the Droid, it's Verizon that's getting my money right now.
April 07 2010 at 12:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGuess everyone missed the news about the new version of CDMA coming out this year. Simultaneous voice and data will be possible. Doubt that means much for the iPhone on Verizon though.
April 06 2010 at 11:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's already out. 1X Advanced has been available since August 2009. No word on if it has been deployed by Verizon though (nearly all of the benefits are behind the scenes. The only way we would know is if a SV-DO Device showed up). I can't think of a better way to announce a 1X Advanced rollout like dropping a CDMA iPhone w/ SV-DO support.
April 07 2010 at 12:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'll echo those voices- I want the iPhone on Verizon! VZW needs to get with it and relinquish some control to Apple. They will win in the end if they just go with it.
April 06 2010 at 11:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyVerizon may want the iPhone, but the definitely don't want to give up control of the applications. I think the biggest problem is not hardware but Verizon's need to control what apps can be put on the phone. They would want just their own crappy apps and would dumb down the phone as well. They don't like the iTunes store either. They won't agree any time soon.
April 06 2010 at 11:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't think that they would do that as the marketplace for Android Apps seems pretty open.
April 07 2010 at 3:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's not like this will stop people from believing in the fantasy that is the CDMA Verizon iPhone. Hell, Apple and Verizon could release a press release together stating that they will NEVER partner together for as long as both exist, and people would still hold onto the delusion that it could happen one day.
