iPhone OS 4.0: No multitasking for iPhone 3G and second gen iPod touch

While Apple will be serving up a hearty meal with iPhone OS 4.0, not all iPhones and iPod touches will be able to offer up the full experience. Only the iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod touch will be capable of handling all seven features highlighted at the event today (multitasking, folders, mail enhancements, iBooks, better enterprise features, Game Center, and iAd).

While the iPhone 3G and second generation iPod touch "will run many [of these] things...there are some things they won't run," according to Steve Jobs at the event. The most notable of these things is multitasking, which Apple said the iPhone 3G and second generation iPod touch just can't handle (of course, we know they can on jailbroken units, but Apple didn't acknowledge that possibility). There was no mention of the first generation iPhone and iPod touch, with the implication being that if you want multitasking on the iPhone, it's 3GS only... or perhaps some new hardware that might be announced later this year.

As one who balked at the iPhone 3GS -- both because I didn't qualify for AT&T's upgrade price and because I don't find its features compelling enough to justify a purchase -- this certainly shortens my purchase cycle. There are probably many in the same boat. While I was going to purchase the next generation iPhone anyway, I'm now contemplating upgrading to an iPhone 3GS or better.

I don't think this is fair. I have a 3G and was excited for multitasking until I found out they aren't releasing it for this model. What gives? Jailbreakers have already proven the 3G CAN multitask just fine. So Apple wants people to upgrade to the 3G S. Ok, great, I would love to but I am locked into my contract and am not eligible yet to upgrade to the 3G S! So what's it gonna be, Apple? Let me upgrade and I will. Or maybe I'll go get the Backflip... I hear Android is pretty cool.

I was under the implication that the iPhone 2G was not compatible with iPhone 4.0, or is it?

I'm done with apple and their stupid tactics. It's not because a 3G can't handle it, they want to sell more 3GS phones. They did the same crap with 2G owners and MMS. They hold out on key features that my grandmas phone already had years ago. They did this with the camera, and Flash. HTML5 may be the future Jobs, but it won't be during my phones lifecycle. Apple plain and simply don't care about us, Jobs can keep his iAd crap I'm getting an android phone next time around.

The transmitter doesn't allow you to listen to radio you know... you need a reciever to do that.

APV, The FM radio chip inside the iPod and iPhone came part of the Broadcom (?) chip that also supplies Wi-Fi / BT. It allows both FM transmission and reception. Apple disables this through software, for now.

There were things the 3G could do that the 2G couldn't.

There were things the 3GS could do that the 2G and 3G couldn't.

There will things the 3G-HD will do that the 3GS won't.

4.0 will take iPhoneOS into its fourth year -- it took less than half that time for Android to fragment...

PEOPLE. You have lived without multitasking for YEARS. STOP COMPLAINING. You are still getting 99 other new features! SOME OF THEM AMAZING!

Although it is a little bit disappointing that the 3G will lack multitasking I do understand that Apple is taking the route to support only the last generation of the iPhone with the latest features. It's a common practice other companies are following too.
So far so good, as a current 3G owner, and now that I at least know how the future looks like, I'm going to skip the 3GS and wait until next year (when the current contract expires) to pick a new phone.

In other news, "The 1976 Ford Mustang rear seats will not be compatible with the 1999".
It's the same thing over and over again, and I would think that most of the readers of this site understand it. Newer technology replaces older; you can't run most of todays software on older equipment. Let's face it, the 3G will be 2 years old and in mobile terms - Older Tech.

If this disappoints you and you feel that you want to make the switch to another platform or device, I applaud you. You have used your freedom to make the best decision for YOU. Apple is not the only vendor out there!

Love the "I've got a Nexus One" comments. Android 2.1 isn't even as good as iPhone OS 3.1.3, let alone what 4.0 offers. I've had the Droid since November, and while it's a decent OS (especially the voice recognition) it still pales in comparison to the iPhone. Copy and paste in particular is horrible on Android, as is the virtual keyboard.

I'd love to love Android; I just can't.

Am I the only one noticing the new Calculator icon in the iPhones on the slide? That's not what they have right now for sure
