iPhone OS 4 Secrets: Some early glitches reported by devs

Well, it's a few months away from release, so fortunately Apple's engineers will have a chance to fix some bugs that are already being reported by an anonymous tipster. Dave installed 4.0 on his iPhone 3GS and noted that the following items don't work properly:
  • Can't change lock screen or home screen wallpapers. Settings gives him the choice and indicates the choice has been made, but nothing changes.
  • Wallpaper can't even be picked on a 3G
  • iTunes doesn't recognize folders and will not perform a backup, displaying an error message that the "backup failed because it was refused by the iPhone." It looks like a new iTunes version will be forthcoming. He also mentioned that folders are interesting, but limited to 12 apps per folder. If you have a lot of games, you'll end up with folders named "Games 1", "Games 2", "Games 3", etc...
If you find any other interesting bugs in the iPhone 4.0 beta, please let TUAW know.

The glitches are coming to me by the boatload on my 3GS. It's so irritating. Here is my list so far:
1. You Tube app doesn't connect to 3G. Usually deletes log in so I often have to put my information back in.
2. After watching 3-4 online videos (You Tube or Online HTML-5), video freezes and need to perform a hard restart.
3. In Safari, bookmark pages do not load, giving an error. Information Bar on top dissapears.
4. Settings: Usual iPhone 3G connection issues, causing me to turn on and off Airplane Mode, Reset Keyboard does not fully work (words are still in dictionary.
5. Photos issues: Faces and Places
6. Discoloration when zooming in when using Camera Zoom
7. Mail: Unable to connect issues, problems downloading new mail
8. App Store shows errors when looking for updates.
9. Maps: Compass way off at all times, loading maps when on 3G is ridiculously slow, even with full bars.
10. So many 3rd party apps crashing and glitching (but typical in a Beta release)
Other then that, I like 4.0. It's really fluid and nice. Multitasking is also very convenient when using the in-home apps.

I did not go through the entire thread, so I a assume that some of this has already been said.
Here is my experience so far:
*Folders are great.
*iCal: if you have more than one calendar you can now chose to display some selected ones. Before you had to chose between all or one. Great improvement, and I kind of wonder why it took them so long for something so obvious.
*mail: I like the direct access to the inboxes, saves you some touches when you have several accounts. I don't like the solution of message threads though. Gmail does better by including your own messages explicitly.
*same background image issue as reported above. Found the same solution as mentioned. Was also surprised about the lack of a "no image" option and took a photo with my finger on the lens.

*multitasking can be a pain since it does not work yet - it seem that all apps end up int he non-"task manager". In most cases that does not hurt, but sometimes they would not start properly anymore. Killing them from the app switcher solves this. For example, I had the iPad app not displaying anything anymore (music still played) and I could not select new songs. Killed the app, restarted, all fine.
Do all apps have to be rewritten for multitasking? That does not appear to be an efficient way of doing it... and also not really necessary, I think. OS4 is not particularly smart about it. I have a quickdial app that shows up in the app switcher after I hang up...

Did anyone figure out if there is a way of selecting between switching and killing an app? What if I want am running Skype and want to stop the app without logging off on my iPhone? tripple press? I get the impression that there is not yet a solution for this...

Mine did too... I tap on the voicemail button in phone.app and it dials voicemail.

2. My camera turns without issue

4. My folders have stayed through 4 syncs in the past 2 days.

All this is on a 3G.

I get an auto restart whenever I quit the "Videos" app from the multi-tasking bar.

Zooming the camera does not work. They come out very interesting it's basically black and white and the color is moved to other areas of the picture. Also, when trying to zoom in on text in safari it tends to highlight it for copying instead of zooming in. I have also had some apps like NYT that will not stay open long and crash to a black screen. On others some buttons and features don't work. And on changing lock screen and home screen, the problem is that it takes longer to accomplish than the loading thing shows so if you wait a few more seconds after the loading stops it will work. Streaming podcasts while doing other things or having the phone locked no longer works which is ironic being that os 4.0 is all about multitasking. Of course I have had some other random crashes but that is to be expected. One feature that I really love is spell check. It puts a red squiggly under misspelled text and when you touch it, it comes up with a copy and paste like thing only it has the possible corrections. Also folders is awesome. I consolidated from like 9 or 10 pages of apps to just over three. This is my favorite feature and I have had no problems with it so far.

Flaws So Far:

1. Photos in albums other than camera roll distorted
2. Airplane mode doesn't work. Radio switches itself back on.
3. Wallpaper settings work only through the settings app and not via photos.
4. Syncing doesn't work with folders. They get destroyed.
5. Spell check not working on 3G Handset.
6. Digital Zoom not working on 3G Handset.
7. Facebook app doesn't upload pic considering it as a video
8. Fast switching menu doesn't get cleared even after restart or hard reset, inconvenient to remove apps manually.
9. Phone heating more than usual (slightly on long term usage) even when not charging

Further posts yet to come..

Phone however seems a lot faster even with a whole lot of apps open.. Good job there apple

Running 4.0 b1 on a 3gs - looking really quite good. As others have noticed, a few bugs.

1) wifi - couldn't get to connect to either of my 2 home APs, both of which are N linksys routers. Adjusted one of them to turn off the 5GHz channel, and set the 2.4GHz channel to G (instead of mixed or N mode), which is working for me now.

2) wallpaper - just do settings from Settings tab, as others have said, and works fine now. (Lock screen and wallpaper)

3) Using folders - LOVE this. From 9 spread-out pages to 3 very clean ones.

A trick if you can't get an app inside a folder, assuming the folder isn't already full, is to make sure the folder isn't on the end of a row. If it is, I'm playing bounce - won't hold still and let me drop the app in. I move the folder to the middle of the row first, and then it works fine.

4) Install - COULDN'T GET IT TO WORK ON PC - had to do with latest iTunes on my Mac. (The Alt or Shift-Restore button wouldn't ever prompt for the OS file). Tried reinstalling latest itunes download v9.1.0.79 and didn't help). I installed the OS on my mac, then used the PC iTunes to restore backup, and things are good.

5) Since using folders, can't get a iTunes Sync backup to work - same failure as others have mentioned. Just a new iTunes version with folder, support, I imagine. (Release notes warned about this).

Overall, LOVING it. Again, as others have said, it's BETA - but not bad. Speed good, occasional glitches, but pretty solid overall.

6. Another glitch I noticed - when first restored, my exchange calendar alert notifications went nuts - hundred or so popping up one after the other, going back awhile - probably to the 3 months I had been set to sync calendar prior. settled down after I acknowledged them all.

Has anyone gotten their bluetooth keyboard to work with the new OS?
My iPod Touch (2G) is searching for it with no success.
DId Apple exclude this feature for the 2nd Gen iPod?
