Photoboard is updated and upscaled for the iPad
If you always wanted a 'magic wall' for your iPad, Photoboard HD (US$2.99) is probably as close as your are going to get. This app originally appeared on the iPhone and iPod touch and lets you manipulate photos by scaling and rotating them to create interesting collages. The new iPad version has higher resolution (natch) and photos look pretty stunning on it. Obviously inspired by the breakthrough work of Jeff Han, and widely seen on CNN, Photoboard HD is fun to play with, but I'm searching hard for a practical use. Certainly you can re-arrange photos and make for some interesting groupings, but beyond that you're pretty much done.
It would be nice to see more options for framing the pictures, and more backgrounds, including ones I choose myself. As it is, the app is a nice demo of the graphic power of the iPad, but most photographers would probably rather create their collages in Photoshop.
I liked the idea of this app, but it needs more customizable features, and a definite purpose.
There are some screen shots in the gallery below, but at a reduced size the screen shots don't do justice to the quality of the images:

Seems like it would be a neat way to give presentations. I could see using it like the folks on CNN do if I could add content other than pictures. Maps, videos, images from Pages, Numbers etc. I suppose you could accomplish some of that by doing screen grabs using the native screen capture technique but it would be nicer to have some of that built in.

I'm the co-creator of Photoboard HD together with Julian.
First of all, we would like to thank you for your review and feedbacks. As daily readers of TUAW, we've really appreciated reading a post about our app here.
We can't wait to get our iPads and add some missing features we've withdrawn from the Day-1 version. We also strive at keeping the app simple and uncluttered.
By now, we basically used pieces of paper and a notepod+ to re-design PBHD UI for the iPad.
@MikeWard
We managed to display videos on the board but it was before the official iPhone SDK release. We have some hope in the 4.0 API to get back this feature :-)
@Kyle Tress
Moodboard looks neats, I like the "Organizing Inspiration" dimension of your app !
@Chris Newton
In fact you can actually resize up these small pictures by zooming the background in. In the other hand you're right, it would be probably more conformable to set a minimum scale limit.
Julian already fixed that in the upcoming 1.1 free update, PB is going to have this fix as well.
We use to keep tracks and take care of every bug reports or feature requests in our PB development page :

This is the way we build our roadmap to further releases.
Cheers,
Cedric & Julian
I have the iPhone version of this, and it's pretty terrible. The controls were awful, and more often than not, while trying to do other things, my images scaled images so small they could no longer be seen or controlled.
The app was so bad that I just assumed development had ceased. This article disappoints me because it suggests that the developers of it just didn't care about the quality of the original app, and are now looking to cash in on a new set of potential victims. I think it had potential, HAS potential, but they really need to step up the commitment to quality.
Hi Chris!
I'm the other Photoboard developer, Julian, and well, I have to respond to this.
First, I need to correct Cedric about the bugfix: I did fix a bug in the multitouch code, but it doesn't help that the images can get too small accidentally. I do realize that this is a problem though, and I'll write a "fix" (soon).
But here's what I really wanted to say:
Indeed, Photoboard development did cease soon after the release of the iPhone version.
But it isn't because of greed, or because we don't care about quality.
When you think of us, you seem to think of a company that's trying to "cash in" on customers.
When we published the first version (I'll speak for me now), I was right at the beginning of my studies at the university of Munich (Informatics, of course). We just managed to push out the first version of Photoboard before my first semester started. After that, I was quite busy studying, so, as said, Photoboard development came to a halt.
I'd like to give you an impression how this phase was for me: For example, when I developed the Slideshow feature and the grouping stuff, I was doing that in a bed in a flat of a relative of mine; I was desperately looking for my own place at the time (it's quite hard in Munich).
Ultimately, I found a place, and the money I made with Photoboard helped me a lot - I paid the desk I'm sitting at right now with that money.
So in conclusion: We do care about Photoboard, it's just that we're developers that are also busy doing other stuff. And we're back working on Photoboard, there are new features to come - we have a big picture in mind.
Thank you, and all the others, for buying Photoboard. It really helped.
A cool concept, not too interested in its uses for photos but with various files and media.
It would be cool for creating desks or workspaces to collate files for aproject. On the iPad it might not be totally useful, but a desktop program like this!
Anyone know of such a program in existence?
Hi Mel,
"I liked the idea of this app, but it needs more customizable features, and a definite purpose."
I am the co-creator of a similar app called Moodboard. We built it as an easy way for designers and decorators to create mood boards on their iPad. We have some customizable features such as the frames you mentioned, plus a color wheel generator. It doesn't look like Photoboard was going after this particular market like we are, but it could serve it well. If you want to check it out, here's the link:

iTunes description states that you can run a slideshow from the created collages which would be great for Digital Photo Frame implementation.

Yes you can, but lots of apps do this and it's not the primary purpose of the app. Thanks for commenting
