Why we didn't hear about a new iPhone at the iPhone OS 4.0 event

Today's iPhone OS 4.0 event was exclusively focused on new software features of the iPhone platform. Many people were expecting to hear about new hardware, too, and those people were undoubtedly disappointed when no hardware announcement was made. However, as one of our own readers pointed out to us, no one really should have been surprised that there was no hardware announcement today -- you only need to look at the past three years of Apple's releases to see the pattern.

Original iPhone released: June 29, 2007
Original iPod touch: September 13, 2007

iPhone OS 2.0 announced and demoed: March 6, 2008
iPhone 3G and OS 2.0 release date announced: June 6, 2008
iPod touch update: September 9, 2008

iPhone OS 3.0 announced and demoed: March 17, 2009
iPhone 3GS and OS 3.0 release date announced: June 9, 2009
iPod touch update: September 9, 2009

See the pattern? Here's what we can predict from it:

iPhone OS 4.0 announced and demoed: April 8, 2010
iPhone update, OS 4.0 release date announced: June 2010
iPod touch update: September 2010

Apple's Mac updates were once artificially tied to events like Macworld or WWDC so they had a media platform to use for their major announcements. This was part of Apple's stated reason for backing out of trade shows -- so they could release Mac updates on their own schedule, not the media's. That said, Macs are still largely dependent on other manufacturers' hardware cycles (mainly Intel's) for updates. This means that Mac updates are probably always going to be relatively sporadic and unpredictable.

iPhone and iPod updates, on the other hand, are far easier to predict -- so far, they've been coming out with almost clockwork precision. Particularly since Apple is now developing their own mobile CPUs, the company is beholden to no one else's release schedule. With the pattern that's emerged over the past three years, it's pretty clear that Apple is committed to a cyclical, 12-month schedule for its portable lines: OS betas in spring, iPhone and OS updates in early summer, iPod updates in late summer. it's not clear yet how the iPad will fit into all this, and it won't be until the device goes through at least one revision. In the meantime, we can all stop being surprised when Apple doesn't make iPhone or iPod touch hardware announcements outside of the cycle outlined above.

Thanks to TUAW reader Nick.

Being a three G owner I'm hurting for a viable update as the iPad sort of missed the mark for me. I didn't expect hardware this soon so the 4.0 reveal just incresed my interest.

As to hardware and what I want to see it is pretty simple a faster processor and more RAM. A lot more RAM actually. A bigger screen would not hurt either as long as it is day light viewable. I don't need a camera at all and need a front facing camera even less. Oh and we need far more Flash memory.

That is the really highly desired items. To a lesser extent I'd like to see a USB port and or a SD card slot. Also a barometer and temperature recording device would be nice to. Laugh if you will but sometimes you just want to know what is going on locally with the weather. A separate mic input would be nice to, this to have a recording channel separate from the headphone channel. Think high performance mic input for recording at lectures and meetings. Oh AM/FM radio and shortwave.

Is 4G ready? If not, why would Apple release a new phone that is not 4G ready? I don't need a new phone if I can get the 4.0 OS, I have 3Gs so I have compatible hardware. I don't want a new iPhone unless is is 4G ready.

That's fine...you have the 3GS. I still have the 3G and before the new OS comes out, I (and I'm sure thousands fellow 3G'ers like me) would like to know whether to expect new hardware or simply jump to 3GS now. But if I have to wait until June to hear for sure, I'm okay with that.

I just can't believe that the Q&A time was wasted on a question like "what does Apple do to make driving safer" rather than one of the two questions EVERYONE wants an answer to:

1. New carrier?
2. New HW?

Apple is brilliant at marketing... and one of the key facets of marketing is keeping the message focused and singular. It's why they didn't announce this until the iPad was out. It's why, in all likelihood, nothing else significant will be released until iPhone 4.0 is out in the wild. They're masters at building suspense.

PS. having looked it up, both the iPhone 3G and 3GS were announced at WWDC keynotes, with the 3G on sale in the US about a month later (11 July) and the 3GS on sale in the US about 10 days later (19 June). WWDC is currently rumored to be starting in late June. I'm not surprised we didn't hear anything today, but I think these predictions are missing some data.

I'm wondering whether the pressure of getting the iPad done might have knocked Apple off their regular schedule. Based on this history, the 4.0 announcement is a wee bit late, so the phone announcement/release might be also.

And, weren't some of those phone announcements at WWDC keynotes? Which is set on Apple's schedule, not anyone else's, and not yet announced.

This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with how movies are made at Pixar. They worked for years to get their product cycle down to a single year, and have been able to maintain that pace, along with the quality of the films they produce through tight adherence to their process.

I suspect that Jobs has been pushing Apple towards this same type of schedule for all their products, releasing a new product, and then doing one major revision on a repeatable schedule.

Regarding the iPad, it would make sense to release updates at the same time as the iPod Touch.

The "Fall" release mentioned would seem to support this.

while Apple might be dependent on Intel's roadmap, they seem to be not in too much hurry to actually keep up with it (*cough i5 / i7)

These predictions seem pretty logical. I hope they are true as i won't be able to update my os in the end of July and august.
They'd better come with a relese date very quickly
