Breaking: Twitter acquires Tweetie, will make it official and free
Twitter founder Evan Williams has posted on the official blog that the company will be buying Tweetie, an iPhone app currently available in the App Store, from creator Loren Brichter. The app will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and released in the App Store for free. Williams says that Twitter users have looked for an official app in the store and haven't found one, so he says that they hope to solve that problem by providing an official App Store location for Twitter.Brichter will be joining the Twitter team, and he'll be working with them to eventually provide a Twitter for iPad app as well. More information on the deal (as well as that price change) is coming soon, though Williams didn't say when the iPad app might be released.
So, wow. A little shakeup in one of the biggest app genres on the iPhone. There's no word yet on what will happen to the Mac version of Tweetie, or any other plans Brichter might have for the App Store. Here's a statement from him. Stay tuned for more insight and analysis soon.

You people are complaining about a company acquiring software and cutting the price? For 3-20 bucks?
Try complaining to people who bought the predecessor to DVD Studio Pro for $4,000, people who bought Shake for $10,000, or companies who bought WebObjects licenses for $50,000.
not my problem. but my problem is i want my money back.
April 11 2010 at 1:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI want my hard earned money back IMMEDIATELY! I hate thieves like this who think they can get away with this acts. I paid fir tweetie one and second I've do hive back my Monty. Shouldve got the free ones instead. Curse you

Although its too soon to bitch and moan to Atebits regarding the outcome of Tweetie2 for mac, I would be happy enough if we get that upgrade for free as well and that they dont add iAds to the application for iPhone.
If not, then you know there is no harm done, $3 bucks is really nothing, but there should be something done for those that shelled out the dough.
Just my thoughts.
I am sick to death of some of the skinkflint losers who do nothing but moan !!!
However if the iPhone tweetie could allow me shorten URL's like it does for the desktop app (and twitterifc) do then i'd be 110% happy with with it!! and no i don't want my money back!!
I can't see the point of buying it but i guess they got a plan
You do know you can already shorten urls in tweetie 2? when your typing a tweet by the character counter if you tap on it a menu will slide up and it says "shrink URL"
April 10 2010 at 12:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOh crap, I paid for something they're now giving away!! Well, that's just plain un-American.
This comment brought to you with a massive spoonful of sarcasim.
Seriously, folks, its $3 bucks. Should I be asking Square for the difference of the $50 I paid for Final Fantasy 1 back in the day when there's an upgrade version on the iPhone now for $10?
No.
Tweetie with interactive iAds would be awesome. I could play games like GTA written in HTML5 while I watch my twitter stream update.

I really wish they would keep the name tweetie and just call it the official app. I like the name and I think calling it plain "Twitter" would take away from it's unique feel or something. I really do hope they never add ads to the app.
I don't regret buying it because it's such a well designed app, that I want Loren to get a return for the hard work.
I'm pretty sure the Mac application is still being worked on. Atebits popped up in the macheist forums and said:
Hey all - first of all I apologize for any confusion, things have been a bit crazy! I just want to says I'm blasting through the todo list to get a beta put together as fast as I can, the Mac UI stuff I've been prototyping is just too cool to have anything else happen to it. Sorry for keeping it short, gotta get back to coding!
So on that front I guess we're all cool. Also, just an idea, but if they're going to stick in iAds and you don't like it just don't upgrade and keep Tweetie 2 as Tweetie 2 not Twitter for iPhone?
Unfortunately it will be the same with the iPad. Great show BTW
