Poll: Will you be upgrading your iPhone hardware to take advantage of multitasking?
Multitasking is the number one requested feature since the iPhone launched almost three years ago. With the introduction of iPhone OS 4 SDK, Apple has finally brought multitasking to the iPhone and iPod touch. The catch is that you need to have a 3rd gen iPod touch (released in 32 and 64GB versions last fall) or an iPhone 3GS. Any iPhone or iPod touch before those versions do not possess the hardware capable of supporting multitasking. At least, that's Apple's position; jailbreak users have been multitasking for a long time on that gear.
What we want to know is how many of you are going to be updating your iPhone OS devices to take advantage of the multitasking features? Vote in the poll and leave us your thoughts in the comments!
| Heck yeah, I'm still using an original iPhone/iPod touch. | |

| Yep, I've got a iPhone 3G and this is a great reason to upgrade. | |
| Nope. If my 3GS will support multitasking, I'm sticking with it. | |
| No way! I hate "planned obsolescence." |

Why isn't there a poll option for "I don't give a crap about multitasking?"
April 16 2010 at 7:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was planning to upgrade to whatever comes out in June anyway; have done ever since the 3GS came out as I didn't think it was worth the upgrade fee because my contract didnt run out until January. The new OS just sweetens the deal.
April 12 2010 at 3:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replythe thing that Irks me is that the low end touch won't work, even though they are still selling it! wouldn't that be like still selling a PPC Mac when Snow Leopard came out?

You can get a subsidized upgrade every 18 months by extending your contract for 2 years from date of purchase. I went from WM phone to a 3Gs in July '09 that. My account status shows Dec '10 as my next opportunity for subsidized upgrade.
YMMV
I'm on a 3g and will likely update if the conditions are right. Number one is that I'd really like an unlocked iPhone. Not because there is anything wrong with AR&T as locally they are great. The problem is the expense of traveling with an unlocked phone. If you are going to be anywhere outside the US for a length of time buying a sim chip for that country makes lots of sense. The cold reality is that this won't happen.
Another big issue is cash, if I get roped into an iPad there might not be any new phones this year.
Finally the primary reason to upgrade is for a much faster processor. Let's face it a 3G is sloooooow. Frankly I don't really need many of the other features rumored to be coming. Speed and lots of RAM are what will catch my eye.
As a side note there is lots of discussions about multitasking on the 3G and older Touches. I haven't tried it because I'm not willing to mess with my only phone. Given that, the range of reports here indicate a wide variety of experiences most likely due to individual app make up. Some apps will use more CPU time than others, so you get a wide variety of reports on what is viable. It is something that fails to set with those negative about multitasking, the usefulness of multitasking should be decided by the user.
As to what Apple is doing with iPhone 4.0 it is hard to judge it's value. We will know more in a few months but right now it doesn't look like a solution to every problem. Somethings look to be solved well though so maybe enough problems will be relieved to make for wide acceptance. Frankly I don't see this as stopping the need to jailbreak for what it is worth. As for old devices I don't know exactly what Apple is doing and why they are targeting new devices only. It could be hardware in the CPU, RAM or any of a number of other things, but I doubt it was planned. In fact I don't think they ever really planned for multitasking but instead are reacting to customer demand and competition.

I wanted to keep my iPhone 1st generation until it was no longer supported by Apple, which is now. The extra features the 3G/3GS had were nice, but not enough to get me to upgrade. I was tempted before the 3GS came out, but once it was revealed and still had the plastic back I said no. Multitasking is something I really wanted since day one, so I'll live even if they keep it plastic.
Plus, a lot of Apps probably won't support 3.x anymore, and iTunes and the App store are not aware of that, so if I'd keep my 1G and accidentally hit upgrade all in iTunes I'm screwed. They really have to add something to either stop showing upgrades that are not supported by your firmware anymore or have multiple versions for Apps, so if you accidentally upgrade, you can get the previous version.
Curious to see how they tackle that issue, if they leave it up to the developer to create universal Apps that run on 3.x and 4.x or if they leave it up to the user or if they actually do something to make the App store "device aware".
But to answer the original question in a short sentence: I WILL upgrade to the new 3GS successor aka 4G/4th G.
I dont understand the purpose of this poll for 3GS users.. Of course people will stick to their 3GS and enjoy multitasking as Apple hasn't announced the launch of any new Hardware for the iPhone. I am glad that apple isn;t planning to release a new hardware within 12 months of 3GS launch. I would be happy to move to an upgraded hardware next year :)
April 12 2010 at 12:38 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replymy jailbroken ipod 2g can multitask with no problems which tells me apple is holding back multi-tasking to encourage people to upgrade. sorry apple, next time I won't buy an ipod.
April 11 2010 at 11:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've had my 1st gen 8gb iPhone since Dec 07, voice only. Considering on upgrading my iPhone hardware when a new model comes out.
But another option is to keep my current iPhone and getting the iPad with 3G ($15/mo) ... lots of time to think about it...
@Ted - actually, never. The closest I've ever come to uploading files has been emailing pictures. My iPhone usage has NEVER involved uploading anything otherwise. Not everyone's usage is the same so not everyone cares about the same features.
