Hell freezes over: Opera Mini for iPhone approved!
Apple has approved the Opera Mini browser for the iPhone, causing a collective gasp of shock around the Internet. Opera announced the approval this evening, saying that the free app will be available within the next 24 hours. UK and Australian readers are reporting to Engadget that they're able to download the app already. Want to give it a try? Give this link a shot.
As soon as we've tried it we'll report back. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I have to say Opera for Iphone sucks, I expected better and got worse! It loads Gmail as it would on a cell phone (not the Iphone evrsion like it should), when it loads full versions of web sites it is zoomed so far out that text looks like lines and you can't read any headings, it only has two zoom levels, zoomed out can't read any text, zoomed in, can only read close up text.
Horrible browsing experience for the Iphone, I wll not open it again until I here they have improved it, stick with the original Safari browser or buy ICabMobile which is an improvement on the Safari browser not a step back like the Opera Mini browser is.
Have to say that despite some nice touches, I'm not that impressed. Experience reviewed here: http://www.techloving.net/2010/04/opera-mini-5-app-released-for-iphone.html

app opens up and it keeps on loading with the a circle rotating in the corner..am I the only one with this problem. btw I have 3.13 firmware..
Tried it out for a few hours and i like it a lot. Hopefully next update will fix the following bugs:
- autocorrect is disabled when typing anywhere!!! Writing this post now in opera mini and its a bitch to type!!!
- lack of pinch to zoom and only two zoom levels (on or off) is a fail
- youtube links do not work
- vertical scrolling is buggy and drifts left to right very easily
- no next or previous buttons when filling out forms
- when flipping between landscape and portrait view, you must manually hit refresh to make the page render properly, unlike in safari whete its automatic
- i would like a full screen view to be one of the bottom buttons, not buried within settings. Also i would like the mobile view option to be site-specific and not a global setting
Other than that im quite pleased with having an alternative to safari and will certainly be following this app's development
It does allow comment. So far nice but nothing wow too much

You are either zoomed all the way out, or zoomed all the way in. There is no in-between customized zoom via pinch. Also, when in landscape mode, it doesn't zoom in to fill the width of the screen. You'll get a gap of empty space along the right side. Considering almost all of my page viewing is in landscape, this is *very* disappointing.

I just downloaded it here in Oklahoma on my iPad with no problem from the "give this link a shot" part of this post. Thanks!

He does indeed, though maybe not for long... iPhone Protective Services are investigating him for verbal and emotional abuse against an innocent iGadget.
its stuck at loadscreen, im using a 3gs, behind a NAT router and located in argentina. if I disable wifi and leave 3G it loads but it does not browse. Im an opera fan since PC version 5 or 6 I don't recall, I want opera badly on my iphone!
April 13 2010 at 9:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis solved it:
Switch off wireless,
start opera and in "settings", "advance" change from socket to http.
Start wireless
Can't imagine why anyone would want it, but glad you guys got what you want.
