Panoramic iPhone photo app Pano updated to 4.0, on sale now

Debacle Software's Pano app has been a photo favorite since the App Store opened in 2008. The Toronto-based development team announced that they've shipped version 4.0 of the app, with new and improved features (a recent scaling update has since bumped it to version 4.0.1).

As we've discussed before here at TUAW, Pano lets you take panoramic photos with your iPhone camera by giving you a semi-transparent guide to help you align adjacent shots. You can even take 360° panoramic photos if you so desire; it just takes a steady hand and sixteen photos. Once you've taken all of your individual photos, Pano stitches them together to make a seamless photo like the one you see above (which I took in Miami, FL). The new version of the software not only speeds up the process of aligning and blending your photos together, but sports an improved user interface as well.

If you're tempted by Pano, you'll be thrilled to know that the app is currently on sale for just US$0.99 -- it's usually $2.99, and even at the higher price it's a bargain. Anyone who is a fan of photography on the iPhone should pick up a copy of Pano while it's on sale. You'll be glad you did!

Wow, you guys are so far behind the times on pano apps. I have been using the VideoPano app for while now. You just shoot a video and the app makes a pano out of it. Not multiple photos. It works much better than any of the apps mentioned here.

And no I am not the developer or know who they are.

Thank you very much for the reply, Adam! I bought the app yesterday and it's definitely really awesome! Only had enough time to do two pano shots (indoors) but it shows some awesome possibilities! Thank you again - cheers!

With Pano - if you don't align two pics perfectly, will it "fix" them the best it can together like (I'm assuming) AutoStitch will? I couldn't imagine I would be able to align some outdoor shots anywhere near perfectly?! Thoughts? I'm going to buy it now but I'm just curious I guess...

Yeah, Pano automatically aligns, color-corrects and blends the images. The guide just helps you to get it within the right range to get the best results.

Cooling looking app, but it requires iPhone OS 3.1 and I'm not giving up tethering just for a pano app for my iPhone...

I am very impressed by this app too. It does a great job of stitching. If you ever played with the open source stitching apps on mac or PC, you would know that it is a really complex operation with lot of controls to tweak for proper alignment. Pano does the job well without you having to do all those settings yourself.

Here are a couple of pics shot just yesterday (before the 4.0)

I bought and used it for a few months but back then it downscaled the pictures to very lowres pics...i think it still does. that is why i moved to autostitch. it is far more powerful and i would recommend it over pano.

Have they gotten rid of the need to press "use" this image between each photo?

Does this lock exposure between images?

Yes, the interface is much improved, and you no longer need to confirm each photo with the "use" button.

I have never heard of this, so I think I will try it out.

If images come out like that one you took up there, then it is DEFINITELY worth it.

I wonder if images save really big or really small... Because it would be nice to have them on the computer in full size...
