Apple's temptation to overuse iAds
Dave Johnson over at Bnet has written up an interesting post about iAds; he says that Apple's new advertising program is reason enough to ditch your iPhone. Why? Because even Apple, he hints, isn't big enough to stay away from the billions of dollars that it will probably end up bringing in with iAds. The service seems made for free apps, but Johnson argues that, with a platform-level solution for advertising, there's nothing to stop these things from showing up in paid apps either. And I've even had the thought this week that, once Apple gets a taste of advertising revenue, what's to stop it from going even further? Why not include iAds in the actual OS homescreen? Heck, why not include them in OS X? The next Leopard isn't $30 -- it's free, but you'll see an "emotional and interactive" iAd on your menu bar until you activate it.Of course, this is the slippery slope argument, which is a fallacy. Just because Apple has implemented an official advertising system doesn't mean it will one day be using advertising to supplement its OS sales. Moreover, I definitely don't agree with Johnson that it's time to get rid of your phone. However, there's certainly going to be a temptation for Apple here. Google makes $23 billion from advertising already, and even with all its money in the bank, Apple might be surprised at just how popular iAds becomes.

We're all forgetting one important thing: Apple loves design. They wouldn't even allow an AT&T brand label on the iPhone. Do you REALLY think that Apple is gonna start letting iAds run rampent? In their CORE APPS no less, where they've allowed no bloatware or even Intel stickers on their Macs, or brand labelling or branded boot up animations on their phone, where EVERY OTHER MANUFACTUR OF THOSE DEVICES DO?
That's lunacy...
Even Google has a sense of not annoying people too much. In fact this is how Google destroyed Alta Vista, by giving people a simple, ad-less front page.

When I dismissed the ad, Sims3 started on my iPhone and displayed a popup ad for the expansion pack and what looked like "waiting messages" in the new online store...
I doubt iAd is going to make the world any worse than this.
But trust me, you'll hear more complaints about it than any other ads service.
Hell there's probably more complaints about iAds (not yet launched) now than admob already.
Once Apple and developers start seeing how much money they can make, it's inevitable that ads will show up everywhere, including OSx. The lure of money will trump customer satisfacion
April 16 2010 at 6:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyiPhone owners will prefer iAds because the Ads that are in the Apps now are annoying when you click one, it switches you to Safari and it takes time to close Safari and reopen your App. My grandkids love to use my iPhone but they are constantly touching the Ads and then they bring me the phone to help them get back in the App. With iAds I can show them the X in the iAd and they can get back to their App by themselves. I don't click on Ads very often because of the way they work. I click on them by mistake often and it is frustrating. With iAds I would be more likely to click on the Ad because I would know it won't goof up my App. Apple knows this and they will identify the Ad as an iAd. I think users will complain to developers when they don't use iAds once they get use to them. I also think developers will advertise that their paid Apps don't include Ads to get more sales if others start adding Ads to their Apps. So the market will correct for the greedy.
April 16 2010 at 6:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's a bit ridiculous to think that just because the technology is in there, that every app developer will start putting ads into their software. In fact, because of the higher production cost of rich media advertisements (at least time wise) fewer companies may want to take the time to make these movie and game playing ads. Every piece of software you have on your traditional computer already has the ability to include ads. As someone who works in marketing, I appreciate the great ads of the past. All the classic Apple, Volkswagon, Nike, etc campaigns are recognized for their contribution to modern commercial art. You won't get these with Google ads (which I consider to be a rip off for the actual advertiser and lame for the consumer). And if the app offends you with overuse, give it 1 star and let people know. There will be cases of misuse - as always - but the market will correct.
What I'm waiting for is gps enabled advertising. Like when I walk into a mall and it pushes a coupon book to my phone. Or I'm at an amusement park and they push me a park map application.
Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! Almost every blog... let alone the entire net... draws us in so they can advertise us. Try using your internet for a day with only pages that don't have any advertising.
April 16 2010 at 6:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think Apple's iAds is a good idea, there are ads on the iPhone that are ugly and an annoyance, if there are going to be ads (which there are) they need correct implementation.
I call BS on ads appearing all over the shop on the iPhone, Apple could make extra revenue by adding trial versions of software on their macs, it's just one example of how Apple operate. If ads have to exist, make them right.
Apple handles the building and design of the ads themselves, as was mentioned in the keynote, "developers can add them in just one afternoon."
