Thieves steal iPad, finger

Ugh, this is a grisly one -- Bill Jordan picked up an iPad for someone else the other day from an Apple Store in a Colorado mall near him, and as he walked away, some thieves grabbed his bag away so quickly that it took part of his finger off. Scary stuff -- apparently two young men followed him out of the store down to the parking garage, jumped him and grabbed the bag. There was a scuffle which Jordan's pinky finger didn't survive. After rushing off to a hospital, he was told part of the finger had to come off.

We've heard of thieves targeting Apple Store customers before, and especially since the iPad is such a hot commodity, those bags can unfortunately make a big target. Be careful out there. Two videos (both in Flash, unfortunately -- sorry about that) on the robbery after the link below.

This makes my heart hurt. Thieves make me so mad, but to do actual bodily harm like this...over a piece of technology. It just makes me sick. :(

They did show it on the news last night with a good shot of the thief's face. I hope they catch him soon. It's possible that he has also ripped off the Qwest kiosk there in the mall in the past as well.

That someone else he was picking up the ipad for should pay his medical bills.

Now we all know never to do anything for anyone that involves a popular product. Just not worth it.

Why should they?

They didn't knowingly put him in danger, and he could have refused to do the errand if he himself felt there was a risk involved.

Apple could be partly liable it is found that the design of the bag posed a fundamental safety risk, they could argue in their defence though that he was carrying the bag improperly.

At the cost of losing a friendship? Normally no you wouldn't think of having a finger ripped off of you when going shopping, but seeing how people have become rabid over having an iPad, there's no way I'd subject me or any friends to this.

Having my body parts are worth a lot more than any iPad.

I think Apple may be redesigning their bags pretty soon.

Yep, definitely sticking with my iPad 3G pre-order. Besides, the iPad will be in my hands, along with all fingers and thumbs, long before the Apple Stores and Best Buy start selling them.

Gizmodo subsequently purchased the stolen iPad for $5,000 but won't reveal the identity of the thieves.

Apple should put out a reward of $10k for the dirty thieves that did this. It might counter any sort of future violence brought upon by theft of their products.
