It's coming... FarmVille heading to iPhone and iPad

Some will cheer, others will groan, but it seems that the love-it-or-hate-it Facebook game, FarmVille, is on its way to iPhone and iPad. A recent search of domains has uncovered both farmvilleiphone.com and farmvilleipad.com, both reserved by the same company currently overseeing Zynga's official FarmVille website. This means that sooner or later, we'll probably be seeing official clients for Apple's mobile devices.

I've played FarmVille, and I find it to be not so much a game as a "social engine" -- it's basically a bunch of hooks to keep you "playing" and keep you passing gifts and virtual items between your friends. But it's definitely popular, and having official apps for the iPhone (or perhaps even just sites made to access on the iPhone -- the main game is currently done up in Flash) will likely only increase that popularity.

It'll be interesting to see if Zynga makes its way over to these platforms. Ngmoco has already usurped part of the FarmVille mindshare with its popular We Rule game, but if the real thing shows up, it's unclear whether people will go back to the original, stick with the new, or even play (and spend money on) both. We'll have to see.

Hi,
I have been using the iPhone app “Farmer’s Hero” for about a couple months now and love it. It is an app that collects the bonuses your friends have published in your newsfeed for you while you are away from Facebook and puts them in your giftbox in your Farmville game. I run it on my iPhone while I’m at work and also when I’m sleeping. It’s the next best thing to being able to play the actual game on the iPhone!

It's not just Farmville. 80% of Facebook is Flash.

@Quinn Taylor: I totally agree. Usability, accessibility AS WELL as search-engine optimiztion. Flash sites don't get high ranking on Google since it can't index your site. (I know there are ways, but way too complicated)

Childish, whatever. Having this game on the iPhone will silence half of the people clamoring for flash, because they just wanted it to play freaking FARMVILLE.

Now they'll have it, and it won't suck their battery to death while they play it.

Next up: Hulu, and probably Xtube. :/

There are more monthly Farmville players than Twitter accounts. Apple is now going to get a big chunk of change from their 30% on transactions. All because they stuck to their guns with Flash. Zynga doesn't care who they get the money from. You can now buy a fake tractor for a fake farm while standing in a subway or lying on a couch. The social gaming stuff in iPhone 4 OS facilitated all this. Facebook is the only one that might suffer a little from this, but most people will still play on their laptops and desktops. People who are into Farmville will get a new choice, where their game us tailored exactly for that machine with that exact input.

So that's win, win, kinda lose a little bit, and win.
