Voices that Matter iPhone: App Store prices

Here's just a quick shot from Jeffrey Hughes' lunchtime presentation on marketing iPhone apps here at this weekend's Voices that Matter iPhone developers' conference here in Seattle. Because the presentation ran a little long, he had to hurry through his planned section on pricing, but he did share these interesting figures, culled from 148Apps.biz. The average non-game app price in the iPhone store right now is actually over US$3. But the average game price, $1.39 (driven way down by the many 99 cent games available) actually brings the overall app price down another 20 cents or so, putting the total at just $2.79.

That might seem low (especially if you're an app developer who has worked a lot on what you think is a quality app). But given all the 99 cent and free apps out there, it actually seems somewhat higher than I expected. And apparently this includes iPad apps, too, many of which have settled down at $9.99. Interesting stat to see.

Actually for a more realistic picture a filter should be placed on those 99c games.... exclude anything with 3 stars and below, or even 2 it would make a difference.
There are tons and tons of 99c CRAP in there... different variations of the same app that are major travesty to game design. Im surprise devs just ignore these and just rant about 99c prices.
I sure am opposed to the idea of raising minimum game prices, it would make crapplets prosper.

While I understand the importance of getting into apples top lists, and hence the temptation to reduce ones game price to 99c...
The core problem is again not 99c, its the mounds of crapplets that bury your game the moment its released.

big app developers like EA, NGmoco can overcome this because they have name and marketing. But the small ones I agree its difficult without actually going into forums and making your games 99c or free to make it into the lists where it will market itself.

So Leave 99c there, ask apple to censor those crapplets.
How bout making apps with 3 stars or below with less than a certain number of sales per month be automatically booted from the appstore.
Automatic garbage disposal.

It appears that this "average" weights all apps the same. So an app that has sold a million copies counts the same as an app that has sold one copy. It doesn't seem to me that that is a very useful metric. Of course no one other than Apple can say what the real averages are.

I don't think using averages in this case is that interesting. It's better to see what the median is.

Yeh the median might give a more accurate result but even with that point you're not getting the entire picture. As with all statistics there's always data behind the data...

The reference article cited in this post is far more useful for checking out the breakdown:

Lies, damned lies, and statistics...

I came in here to say just this. If I had my way, every time someone cites an average, they would give all the stats—median, st. dev., etc.

Any talk of raising app prices -- even through collusion -- would need to come with a refund/return policy for the half-baked junk that currently litters the app store. I'm tired of paying $3, $4 or $5 for apps that don't do what they do. And it's keeping me from pulling the trigger on anything over that range.

Apple will give you a refund if you ask.

No they won't - at least not in Canada.

I doubt those figures include free apps.

Anti-trust lawsuit waiting to happen. Competitors should never have pricing discussions.
