AT&T posts iPad 3G data information

As iPad 3Gs travel to eager owners, AT&T has posted specifics on data pricing [PDF]. Best of all, you can activate and manage the whole works from the iPad itself. Here's the lowdown of domestic plans. All prices are US dollars.
  • $14.99 per month for 250 MB
  • $29.99 per month for unlimited data
  • Unlimited access – no added cost – to AT&T's 20,000+ Wi-Fi Hot Spots
Domestic plans can be canceled at any time from the iPad with no penalty. Otherwise, they'll automatically renew after 30 days at the same rate.

There's a "usage meter" in the general settings of 3G iPads (Settings > Cellular Data) that lets you monitor your data usage. Additionally, when you purchase the $14.95 plan, you'll get three warnings that you're about to exhaust your plan: One at 20 percent, one at 10 percent and finally at zero. If you do exceed your plan, it simply expires until you renew (so you're not racking up "penalty minutes" or anything like that). Note that AT&T defines a month as a 30-day period.

While you await your 3G iPad, check out our overview of managing your data plan.

So they can cut off the $14.99 plan at 250MB...but when I asked them if they could stop my 5GB limited laptop connect card they said the billing system did not update fast enough to do that.

*sigh* I would have paid the $60 a month for the darn thing, but there was no way I was going to pay $0.05/MB after that.

To activate the 3G data plan does one have to be one a WiFi network or can I activate it in the middle of nowhere when I really need it?

How long before the "unlimited" plan becomes a limited plan? They won't let it continue unlimited for long.

If AT&T allowed iPhone tethering no one would buy a 3G iPad. It's business strategy obviously.

I did wonder that the other day...but I'm not sure it entirely rings true...tethering certainly drops the battery life of the phone quickly...it isn't a perfect solution by any means...so I have to carry a spare power supply...it starts to get cluttered quickly.

OR...you could jailbreak your iPhone and tether your iPad...since ATT can't seem to come up with any solutions there...only excuses. I mean so you can add more and more devices to the data use on their network...like 3g iPads...but using an iPad through an iPhone is all of a sudden too much of a burden.

Hey...don't promise it if you can't deliver it.

I jailbreaked my phone last week because I need my iPad to access the web on the road and why should I pay ATT twice for the same data?

I'm kind of confused how AT&T's network is currently ready for all the new iPad traffic but is still not ready for the iPhone to get tethering... They claim that the iPhone has been a huge data hog on their system... Wait until you get all of these new iPad users. I personally prefer browsing on my iPad rather than on my computer...

What about a reconnection fee if you cancel or suspend your account?

If you cancel your plan before the end of a 30-day period, does your service immediately cancel, or does it just stop renewing your plan after the current 30-day period?

Do I need to get a SIM card from AT&T prior to activating 3G service over the iPad. If so, will the Apple Stores be selling these in the store?

Don't we get access to AT&Ts WiFi with our iPhone accounts?

And why wouldn't I be able to use that same login information for my ipad!!!
