Dear Aunt TUAW: Why won't my apps stay deleted?

Dear Aunt TUAW,

Darn it, my iPhone keeps re-installing my deleted apps every time I sync. Do you know how to make this stop happening? Is my iPhone possessed? I know I'm not alone. This is happening to other people too. Help!

Love and kissies,

Dave

Read on for Auntie's response...

Dear Dave,

When iTunes encounters purchased items on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad that aren't in your library, it offers you the option of transferring those purchases back to your computer. At some point in your life, you agreed to do that. Unfortunately, you also probably checked that little box that says "Do not ask me again," which is why you're encountering the behavior you've noticed.

So how do you undo a previous "Do not ask me again?" It's simpler than you might think. If you've asked iTunes to stop showing a warning message and then later change your mind, you can reset that choice. Resetting warnings "undoes" the choice you made from "Do not ask me again."
  • For devices: Go to the affected device in your iTunes Sources list (that's the leftmost gray column) and right-click (alternatively use Ctrl-Click for a one-button mouse) the device name. Choose Reset Warnings from the contextual pop-up. This resets warnings related to transferring purchases and other device-specific issues.
  • For general iTunes options: Navigate to iTunes > Preferences (or press Command-,) and choose the Advanced tab. Locate the Reset warnings button next to the phrase "Reset all dialog warnings". Click it, and then click OK. This affects warnings like "Can't find song" or "Really delete playlist" alerts.
  • For the iTunes store: Sign into your account (Store > Sign in), view your account (Store > View My Account), and then click the Reset Warnings button on the iTunes Store account page. This resets all warnings related to buying items on iTunes, like asking you for confirmation before proceeding with a purchase.
After resetting your device warnings, eject your device, delete those tenacious applications from iTunes and once again connect your device. When iTunes asks whether you want to transfer your purchases or not, choose not to. The applications will be deleted from your unit during the sync process.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

i have an iPad question: is there a way to keep it from going to sleep? most of the time, i'm happy with it as-is, but when i'm cooking and reading a recipe on it, i hate turning around to do something, then turning back to find that it's fallen asleep. is there an easy way to turn off the sleep function for situations like this?

Anyone know how to run full screen video on a second monitor connected to a late 2009 MBP and retain the ability to do other things on the primary display? When full screen video is playing on the second monitor, such as Hulu, the menu bar and dock disappear from the primary display. Then when I click on the primary display, the video on the second monitor goes back into a windowed mode. Any ideas?

I don't have this problem but if I did, the first thing I'd be doing is opening the Console application on my Mac (in the Utilities folder) and drilling down:
FILES > ~/Library/Logs > CrashReporter > MobileDevice > {Name of Your iPhone/iPad}
and start looking at the crash reports, of which you'll find many, many entries, even for your spankin' new iPad. Obviously, I don't know what you'll find for your problem, but that's where I'd start first if it was my problem.

I used to have this problem all the time. Would also run into trouble with app updates. The apps needing updates and the numbers in the badge were always wrong.

In my case, I found that my app library was too big. I had more than 3,000 apps in my library (mostly free downloads) because I was app crazy. Still in rehab over it.

Once I made the hard task of deleting unused apps, and got the number below 3,000, I didn't have that problem anymore.

How big is your app library?

Thanks for that, not really any use. Think we all know it's a bug, a very annoying one!

Anyone else managed to find a solution?

I keep my contacts organized in address book by various groups. This is nice if I am in front of my computer. But when I meet someone new and I add them to my iPhone, it puts them in whatever "group was viewed last" and I can't figure out how to move them to the proper group on the iPhone. Is there an easy way to do this?

I'm having the same problem as Jim (reply #2) I too got all 13 Lonely Planet guides when they was free, but don't need them all on there all the time.

No matter how many times I try the obvious (Jim Lin - reply #14) the apps will sync back of their own accord the next sync!

I thought it was just me having this problem as I couldn't find a solution for this. Finally someone else got the same headache I'm having.

Have considered going to a genius bar to show someone at apple.

This is what I do to keep my app data:

1. Sync my iPhone to iTunes so that it backs up the app data.

2. Go to Applications, uncheck the app I want to get rid of, and sync again.

You're not really deleting the app, just unsyncing it from your iPhone.

Another solution would be to delete the apps from the device as well. If the app isn't on the iPhone when you sync it, it won't be transferred back to iTunes.

But about the "Do you want to transfer your purchased content?" message box, I'm always dissapointed that it isn't more verbose. The "Unable to transfer files because they can't be found" message tells me which files can't be found, so I know what I need to look for to rectify that. But with the purchased content message, I never know what content it's referring to so I click Yes, only to see what's being transferred back is, as mentioned in this post, things I've deleted in iTunes (or for music, possibly I've edited the album or artist name in some way so it thinks it's different content) that I do not want transferred back. But I don't want to click no and risk losing an album I may have accidentally deleted or something.
