iPad jailbreak released, works on iPhone and iPod touch

Within a few hours of its release the iPad had already been jailbroken and video proof released. The Dev-Team with @comex have released the first "userland" jailbreak for iPhone OS devices since the initial year of the iPhone's release.

The current jailbreak, dubbed "Spirit," allows you to jailbreak all models of iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running the latest firmwares available (3.2 and 3.1.3, respectively, as of this writing).

Also, the authors note that "On iPad, all this is still sort of beta," and as such if anything goes wrong you might need to restore.

Just ran this on my iPod 1G; so much easier than the early jailbreaks that were already really easy. At this point, though, I just jailbreak for the theming.

Let me add to the chorus... you have no idea what you're talking about. Jailbreaking lets you add functionality that Apple otherwise denies you. SBSettings, Backgrounder, Intelliscreen, MyWi, Stacks... all make the iPhone infinitely more useable and user-friendly. I have purchased dozens and dozens of "legitimate" apps through iTunes, many apps through Cydia and Rock but never, ever considered stealing one.

So, please, do us a favor: educate yourself before you spout off.

@Matt I understand I didn't purchase the IP rights to the device, and I understand I cannot make copies of the design and distribute them, but by Jailbreaking I don't think I violate those rights.

Yes, I am modifying the software, but it is for my own personal use.

I mean, how would you like it if you couldn't put an aftermarket exhaust system on your newly purchased car? What about modifying the ECU for better performance? Sure it will definitely void your warranty, but that's it.

Apple's restrictions are absurd. I'm glad though that they can't do much about the Jailbreaking community other than thwarting the efforts. The minute they remotely brick a device for running unauthorized software will be the day they turn into the "thing" that they were fighting to sway away from... "Big Blue".

its nothing to do with stealing apps. I buy from the App Store all the time. Jailbreaking gives me a bigger, uncensored choice + enabling features that Apple doesn't make available

I jailbroke for SBSettings. I play with my phone in bed sometimes, and the screen rotates when I don't want it to. SBSettings + Rotation Inhibitor plugin = LOVE.

Is there an app that will allow me to use my iPhone 3GS's 3G connection by tethering it to my iPad?

Yes - but you actually don't even need to "tether". The application, MyWi, will turn your iPhone into a 3G802.11 bridge. Simply connect your iPad to the newly created wireless network on your iPhone and, badabing badaboom, your iPad is now using your iPhone's 3G connection.

I can't think of many reasons not to jailbreak. SBSettings alone is enough reason to do it.

Yeah it is sad. and BS frankly. I also will try an app via apptrackr etc. before purchase after I learned the hard way and bought a few apps that completely sucked, but the guy here is wrong about everyone JB'ing just to steal shit. Thats the last priority for me, I want the freedom and performance that adding a few apps via Cydia can produce. I have purchased a few apps, mywi, airvideo (not through Cydia of course) and some fonts and themes, as well as "shrink" (IMO a must!!

Cheers
