iPhone OS 4 beta 3 adds orientation lock, iPod controls to multitasking bar

9to5Mac reports that new features have been added to the iPhone's multitasking bar as of the release of iPhone OS 4 beta 3 earlier today. Swiping left from the multitasking bar now accesses a new set of controls. On the far left is an orientation lock, which disables the iPhone's auto-switching between portrait and landscape orientation. This achieves via software the same thing as the iPad's dedicated orientation lock hardware switch. It will make using the iPhone in a reclined position much easier; no longer will the iPhone switch between orientations seemingly at random as you're catching up on e-mails just after waking up. And there was much rejoicing.

To the right of the orientation lock is a set of three controls for play/pause and track skipping in the iPod app, as well as a dedicated icon for the app itself. It seems likely this will replace the current "notification window" method for accessing iPod controls via a double-tap of the Home button.

Cool bit of functionality coming soon in the iPhone OS 4.0 release.

I am running a 3g with the version 4.0 and 5.13.04 firmware. My multitasking works perfectly, I do have the 5MP camera and everything else is working as well. SMS, MMS as well as my data plan and my regular phone calls are flawless. It does work on 3g.

It is running much, much faster on the iPhone 3G than the first two versions did. It is also connecting to the Internet successfully more often - before, I would get frequent failures on full bars of 3G.

The 3G doesn't get wallpapers or multi-tasking, those were the biggies that were missing.

Does anyone know if the 3g has a way to lock the orientation? I have beta3 installed but i don't see a way to do it. I plan to upgrade phones when the new one is released this summer but it would be good to know for the short term or for people not planning on upgrading their 3g.

Also as previously stated beta2 literally almost made me throw my phone down on concrete or in the toilet more than twice... here's hoping beta 3 is a bit better. I haven't had a chance to sync my content/apps back yet, but the shell OS with built in apps does seem to work quite a bit better so that's a good sign at least.

Oh, man. Nice doesn't even begin to cover it. I hate Cover Flow on the iPhone so very, very much, and I've been hoping for a way to disable it since day one. This is awesome.

Oh absolutely in agreement there. Cover Flow was pointless eye-candy that I never used...

TUAW: Please update your article. It was pulled, as noted earlier on Engadget.

Looks like it was pulled. Frankly, I'm surprised beta 2 for 3G stayed up as long as it has, considering it's utter garbage.

First. I wonder if this can be accessed via the lock screen. I know that when I'm driving those iPod contolls on the lock screen are a big help.

Second, I'd think that a landscape lock could be activated when the iPod/iPhone is in its portrait orientation (such as writing notes or email). I mean, it'd be easy to implement, right?

Did you really put this??? You know, when you double click on the lock screen, you DO get the iPod controls...

So this means the new shell won't have a place for a physical orientation lock switch...

I've been wondering about that. I noted that Mr. Gray's phone didn't have one, but I absolutely adore that feature on the iPad. Glad to see it exists in /some/ incarnation.

Deleting running/suspected apps in the dock is now consistent with deleting downloaded apps in that when you touch held on the app, all the apps in the dock are wigelling with the minus badge on them, not just the touch one like it was in pre-beta 3.
