London hotel offers guests iPad during stay

Select guests at The Berkeley in London will gain an extra amenity in addition to their already posh quarters -- an iPad.

When the iPad comes out in the UK later this month, the hotel will offer the iPad to its guests staying in certain suites during their stay. The iPad will include a variety of games, videos and comics for children as well as several newspapers, ranging from Le Monde to the Wall Street Journal. There will also be suggestions for places to visit, utilizing the iPad's capabilities to help plan an itinerary.

Of course, it's far cheaper to actually buy your own iPad than to stay at this particular hotel in order to use one for free. The suites that qualify for this particular extra start at £1,850 per night plus VAT, which is more than $2800USD (as of this writing)!

At most hotels those high dollar (or pound in this case) suites are rented out for far less than their rack rate. In most cases they are actually given out as a comp to someone booking a convention at the hotel. It is very unlikely they get $2800 for that suite more than a couple of times a year and the people who pay that are suckers. Rich suckers, but suckers.

Having an iPad is an image thing for hotels. Mine has had one for a three weeks. Too bad no one in the sales department really knows how to use it.

People who are richer than you aren't suckers.

You have a $50 budget, so you stay in a motel. They have a $50 000 budget, so they stay where they like

I wonder what apps will be on those iPads and if the users can download from the apps store. There are a few apps that would be perfect like, Urbanspoon, New York Times, DreamWalk etc.

I hope they test this with their wireless provider first. I have been unable to use my iPad at the last two hotels I have stayed at (a Hyatt and a Staybridge). It connected to the network fine, but locked up at the log in web page. Neither tech support could figure it out. Glad I brought my laptop.

You know damn well that every single guest that spends the night will be buying themselves an iPad shortly thereafter.

I don't think anyone will be staying in those rooms solely to use an iPad. Chances are, they would have stayed in that room (or a similar room in another hotel) even without the iPad inside it.

well, it is still not worthy. remember, many hotels offer free ipod stuff in bed room. it's the same promotion. why just don't give me free ipad anyway. the point is that nothing is special anymore. it was long time ago.
