Report: Apple could realize $1B of iPad revenue in its 1st quarter

There are some smoking hot numbers coming out of Cupertino CA this week and they're all about iPad sales. Just yesterday, Apple announced that they had sold 1 million iPads in the first 28 days of availability. As Business Insider (BI) notes, selling 1 million units of anything in a month is impressive, much less during April in the USA when most people are fretting over taxes.

BI goes on to speculate that Apple could ship 2 million units by the end of the June quarter. Figuring an average retail price of US$650, Apple has already realized $650 million in revenue and, if they do indeed hit the 2 million milestone in time, the iPad could bring in $1 billion in revenue in its first quarter of availability.

As a little perspective, note that Apple as a whole generated $1.8 billion in revenue during the June quarter of 2000. Plus, it took 74 days to sell 1 million iPhones in 2007 and nearly 2 years to sell 1 million iPods.

As for whether or not the iPad "...means business," I think the answer is clear.

More like $1B in profit. If Apple sells just 3M at an avg selling price of $600, minus the $270 it takes to make, they could reach the big $1B in net sales. Not GROSS but NET!

Sell 2 Million??

NO WAY!

They are still selling them as fast as they can make them, the 3g only just started sales, the first 1 M was in only 28 days, and international sales are beginning soon.

They will easily sell 3 M and possible 4 M, yielding $2 - 3 B X 20% net margin (conservative) $400 - 600 M in profit or 40-60 cents per share.

Then there is all the revenue from the book sales that seems to be 1.5 per user. Should be a blow out quarter. IMHO.

Um, I think it's safe to say Apple will realize far more than $1Billion in revenue in it's first quarter from iPad. They've possibly already hit that number already considering they sold 1.3 million units by the end of the 3G model's launch weekend.

Taking an average selling price of say $650:
$650 x 1,300,000 = $845,000,000

I think they can more than make up the difference in a couple of months.

I have a sneaking feeling feeling that you don't really exist. You're just a tool that Tuaw utilizes to create controversy and encourage rebuttals. Nobody could be as cynical as you in real life. I also notice that you just post your snarky comments and never respond to peoples reactions.

I wish there was a "Block this user" feature so I would never have to read these false posts again.

I said this was gonna be huge!

I had run-in's with a number of doubters on various blogs.

I said the naysayers would have egg on their faces.

I'm almost tempted to go searching through the archives to see who those negative people were, just for kicks :-)

Apple sold over 1 million iPads in the first month of the quarter. That leaves 2 months and an international rollout to 9 countries. Selling an additional million sure seems likely. If they are talking iPad revenue then it seems fair to include iPad accessories, too.

A billion dollars indeed!

Get ready for another surge in stock prices, they were rocketing up until a week ago and they have naturally levelled off for a few days, but let's face it, a good news story is just around the corner every few months at the moment, no sooner will international sales trigger another run, and we will be ready for the new iPhone to keep the ball rolling ;-)

@Joanna Doh!
Yes, very interesting indeed.
It's 11.

11 iPad's out of 1 million iPad's sold, are no longer in use, since their purchase.

iFixit destroyed two.
Will It Blend got one.
These kids who bought one and beat it with a bat is the fourth.
The one that was stolen and cost the owner a finger, is being held for evidence, is five.
And 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 are the ones HP, Dell, Asus, Microsoft, Google and the Chinese black market purchased, to try and copy.

Cause that is the very best they can hope to do. COPY.

So far novelty has only increased. I have had the iPad for nearly a month and it has replaced my laptop when meeting clients. I use the iPad in photography for clients to see photo test shots with filter effects. The iPad is also used for quick drawn mock ups that my clients and I use together to hash out design issues.

Somehow, the iPad has been able to allow my clients to become more involved in the design process. Maybe it's a novelty for them to participate with the iPad. Anyway, I have found a productive use for the device.

I am glad I was on the pro side from the very beginning. Apple got $699 from me for the 64 Gig WiFi model. Money spent well, because they are not getting much from me from the App Store. (Not all the developers, just Apples paid Apps...)
