Crush the Castle for iPhone free today only

I'm not much of a gamer but I adore Crush the Castle. It's a medieval themed game where you use a trebuchet to knock down your enemies who inhabit an increasingly difficult arrangement of fortifications. It's a good test of skill and your knowledge of the physics of heavy airborne objects.

Today only, the full featured game is free, and in Uncle Mel's view it is definitely worth grabbing. It's great for passing the time in an airport, and can help you conquer your daily build-up of frustrations. The sound effects are super, from the screams of your victims to the subtle environmental sounds that match the locale in which a particular round takes place.

My only regret is that there is not yet an iPad version, but it doesn't scale up too badly and is still fun to play. If you haven't played this game, I recommend trying it. If you have only been using the 'lite' version, here's a chance to upgrade at no cost.

Thanks to Bill for the tip!

This was free yesterday, I had it on my Blog. It was only a one day deal.

Went to download it last night when I got home from work and it was back at $0.99. Bummer. Although I have played the free "lite" version and must say it's quite entertaining. Support the developer and pay the $1. If you can't afford $1 for the game, you probably have bigger problems to worry about.

Ummm... I think a more accurate description is "App was unavailable to download for a day, is now back to original price".

Angry Birds clone, that's all this is. Not that it is a bad thing.

This was around before Angry Birds actually. I played the original Crush the Castle in ... *shiver* ... Flash a while back.

You could say it's just a port.

Ya, this is a scam to get us to try the free version. Bad.

Like Mel said, it's not a scam, it's just Apple screwing up. When I went back and looked for it in iTunes, it would show up as "free" on the search results page, but $0.99 on the app page, so I went back to the search results page and downloaded it from there, for free. And I've been enjoying it since! Thank you Mel, thank you Armor Games for making it free for the day! And Apple...get it together, man...

Hi guys:

When I wrote the piece it was free, and said it was free for the day. I know people who downloaded it, and all was fine. Don't know if it is an app store screw up, but will try and check. It's not a scam. It was fine earlier today. Trust me.

Sorry for any confusion.

Most odd.... Following the advice of RenMerc and searching for Armor Games does reveal the free app, but... the free version was updated Dec 18, 2009, then, right next to it is another Crush the Castle which is still at 99 cents and was updated January 19, 2010. The way I read it is that the newer one is always 99 cents and the older one always free. Regardless, it seems that someone got their wires crossed somewhere.

It's worth noting, that the link to the app itself brings you to a listing of $0.99. However! If you browse the developer's listing of apps (Armor Games Inc), it does indeed show as free there. I do not know if the app's page would attempt to charge you $0.99, but the developer's list does get you the app for free (how I got it).
