MyTown updates to version 3.1, adds collectibles and social features

MyTown is one of the hottest things going on the App Store right now in terms of social apps. As we mentioned in the interview with CEO Keith Lee a while back, they've actually got more users than Foursquare. The company has just released version 3.1 of the app, which introduces more collectible rewards earned by checking-in to certain local, real life locations (which you can then use to customize the properties you "own"), as well as more social features. You can now browse through the top trending properties, see your most frequent check-ins, and browse through where your friends are going out to and checking-in from.

Additionally, Booyah tells us that the app is growing by over 100,000 players each week. They're suggesting that the average player of the game spends "more than an hour a day within the app." That's kind of incredible, but if it's true, that's one heck of an attachment rate. In fact, those are exactly the kind of usage stats that Ngmoco's Neil Young would drool over. Considering that MyTown just made an appearance in Ngmoco's We Rule splash screen, odds are that the two companies are at least sharing notes and, at most, possibly primed for a partnership. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

What an incredible big pile of dog poo Booyah released, and then stepped in themselves. This upgrade has taken away all possibility for "fun" and replaced it with boredom. I'll be sitting back for a week or two and watching to see if they decide to bring back some sense of "game".

For the moment, it's just rote dullness that awaits anyone who goes to MyTown.

Very sad indeed.

I play mytown, and yes the new update is absolutely horrible. The main offender here is that they have now limited check-ins to 40 per day. Seriously! There are so many reasons why this is stupid, but mainly it just makes the game a lot less fun. Especially since you can only play it for about 20 minutes before having basically nothing left to do except collect rent every half hour. There are other restrictions too, which are also stupid but I won't go into the details. IMO, Booyah has a death wish here.

Agreed. It seems this once-5-star-app is now heading to the basement.

If you read some of the latest reviews in the app store, it seems many people aren't too happy with some recent changes.
