Orange UK announces iPad Wi-Fi + 3G data plan pricing for UK

They may have a hung parliament in the UK, but at least they know what to do about iPad data plan pricing.

Fast on the heels of Apple's announcement of iPad availability in a number of international locales, we've heard from Orange UK about what they'll be charging iPad Wi-Fi + 3G owners for data plans in the UK.

First and foremost is a "pay for what you use" data plan charging 5p per MB of usage each month up to £40 per month (about US$60 at current rates, a little bit more than the $29.95 "unlimited" plan available in the States). The small print says that this plan is subject to fair usage, meaning that you're limited to 750 MB of usage on that plan -- in other words, you'll never get to that £40 maximum.

If you crave additional data, Orange has four optional bundles, all with an maximum allowed data consumption. The best plan appears to be the iPad Monthly 25, providing 10 GB of 3G data consumption plus unlimited browsing at BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots for £25 per month. A copy of the Orange UK pricing chart follows this post; click the Read More link below to view it.

Thanks to Joe for the tip!

Ouch on the plans.. I just turned in my 3G IPAD one cause the 3G does not work in all of the places I go and of course theres no wifi hotspots either.

But when I called AT&T to cancel the unlimited plan the AT&T person told me that the data amount that the IPAD pulls is huge and in most cases the people who got the $14.95 plan ran out within the first day of usage and were pist off.

I saw this with the Wifi model at the house just normal surfing and 5 email accounts was enough load to draw 250 Meg easily. Thats without Youtube or video streaming. Also watch the data thru put on the network tab and see that the numbers are not always the same. Its weird like I would look a the pad and have 100Meg down then look at it again and it went down to 25Meg this is without a reset of the data usage. The down should go up not down.

Also AT&T also stated that the Cell towers were having issues keeping up with the amount of data that was being pulled from the IPADs. I Europe will be different and they have more Hotspots that US does but beware.

I think the plans and associated prices sound fine. The problem for me is that I think Orange's UK 3G network is bobbins. I've had my iPhone 3GS (my first 3G phone, incidentally) since I got back to the UK at the end of last year and I have been less than impressed with 3G. The overall coverage is not as good as I had hoped (no data connection at all is not unusual) and even with a 3G connection there often does not seem to be any bandwidth to deliver a connection to the Internet, which leads to frequent displays of "The server stopped responding". Now, I can't say that other networks are better because I have no experience with then but I think that they have to be worth a punt. I'd give Vodafone a try with the iPad, if they offer reasonable data plans as well.

For the record, I live just outside of Coventry but tend to travel around the country a fair bit.

Based on these prices I think I''d rather add a tethering bundle to my iPhone plan, then I can share it with my MBP and iPad.

The 'out of bundle' rates are cheaper too.

An iPhone tethering bundle would work for your Mac but not for your iPad. Official iPhone tethering only works over Bluetooth or USB, not over WiFi, and the iPad can only get onto the Internet over WiFi.

To share your iPhone data on the iPad you'd have to jailbreak (which would allow you to share your data over WiFi), and then you wouldn't have to get an official tethering bundle either.

I'm actually glad there's a true pay-what-you-use option, since I'm guessing I'll use the iPad at home 90% of the time and probably wouldn't use 300MB of 3G most months, so that could work out to be the cheapest option (possibly by a long way).

750mb fair use is at WiFi hotspots only. NOT the pay as you need plan and NOT any other plan. Only for Orange WiFi hotspots.

What's up with the quote marks around "unlimited" in reference to the iPad AT&T plan? At the rate I am using it, I might be incurring into overage fees, and I wasn't even warned! :(
Also, can TUAW fix the "Remember Me" feature? It didn't work in Safari, and it is not working in the TUAW app.

Works fine for me...in both

and yea why does tuaw continue to put quotes around unlimited or allude to a soft cap. I believe tuaw posted a story not too long back that specifically says the ipad will NOT have a soft cap like the iPhone does. U are simply contradicting yourselves.

The thing is over here in the UK unlimited never means unlimited, I and others have contacted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to find out why they can merrily rewrite the definition of unlimited and mislead consumers, and they replied stating it was fine and dandy.

Yeah. I had O2 contact me about my usage of my "unlimited" DSL with them. Every time I'd say "So, you're telling me my unlimited plan isn't" the drone on the phone would respond "No sir, the plan IS unlimited BUT subject to a fair usage agreement". Sorry, but the second you say something is "unlimited BUT" you negate the term "unlimited". By the end of the call I felt like headbutting the guy. I could never work in a place like that which makes me tow their weasely redefining of concrete terms. Glad I'm moving back to the US. I know there are companies that do that with "unlimited" there too, but I've never dealt with it personally until now.

Steven and Roberto - if you follow the asterisks carefully you'll note that the 750MB limit applies to the Wi-Fi Hotspot use, not to the 3G use. You may want to update the story accordingly.
