Apple to fix iPad Wi-Fi issues

MacRumors notes that Apple has recently updated a knowledge base support document offering solutions to Wi-Fi issues that a small minority of iPad users have been experiencing. Shortly after launch, Apple's support forums were rife with posts about poor Wi-Fi throughput and lost connections on the iPad. Despite the apparent flood of complaints, Apple has maintained that only a "very small number" of iPad users are affected with Wi-Fi issues (which makes sense because, even if there are 5000 posts from users reporting Wi-Fi connection issues, that's a far cry from the one million iPad's Apple has sold).

For the unfortunate few who are experiencing iPad Wi-Fi issues, there's good news: the recently updated support document states that Apple is hard at work on a fix and will "address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update." Until then, the support document lists a number of workarounds including updating your Wi-Fi router firmware, adjusting the iPad's screen brightness, renewing your IP address, and using WPA or WPA2 wireless security.

If you have access to the AP, try disabling WEP and lock by MAC.

I found this whole "turn down the brightness" thing to be like, the equivalent of a placebo but I turned off the auto-brightness control and, holy smokes, downloads that would timeout suddenly downloaded, and faster than anything before. It's like my download speeds got turbocharged. And I hadn't even noticed that my speeds were sub-optimal and would not have known about the problem until it got really bad.

I looked at the router logs and the Ipad keeps sending out lease requests...almost every minute or so. This means the iPad loses the wifi signal and finds it again 60 times an hour...it's likely many people don't even notice because, aside from the occasional timeout, there are no errors. I suspect this bug is a bit broader...perhaps they circuitry for the auto-brightness is interfering with the onboard wifi chip....

I was having similar issues, I turned OFF auto screen adjust and immediately my download speeds improved and I haven't had any issues for the past few hours. I got this advice from another forum and it was working well there for many people as well.

I thought it was magical and revolutionary. It seems like Apple is beginning to act like other large scale manufacturers. It time to slow down and get back to what made you the best. Quality, well thought out and tested products.

The only 5,000 should be a concern, because not everbody notices a low signal and some people just live with the cutting off. I know this from dealing with my Nintendo DSi. I often suffer from cutoffs when I'm about 40 feet from my WiFi device at home and the occasional completely random cut offs, lately. ( which might be weather related?)...... Also there is the weak strength when it comes to the wifi plaza on the Pokemon games, which is weaker than my browser shows.(Game signal fluctuates and the browser stays pretty much full, when in device range.)

I have the wifi issue when the brightness is turned all the way down and I can replicate it every time. If I turn the brightness down all the way, the wifi will not reconnect when it comes out of sleep mode. Also, the 3G will not connect as it says no service but the second that I turn up the brightness( only has to be a notch), the it connect immediatly. I think it has something to do with power saving or something. Hope they fix it but with this issue, it is an easy fix. :)

Really? So, does this mean they will finally fix the wifi issues that have plagued MacBooks for since they came out?

Adjust screen brightness!!!
So the first day with my iPad I was not having any wifi issues at home or work. Then every day after that I was having issues where ever i went. Every time the iPad 3G went into sleep mode (screen off) then awoke it would be dropped from wifi and not auto reconnect. No mater what access point I was connected to, home, work, friends it didn't matter. Now I read the apple support document, I set my screen brightness to lowest the first night since its was so bright at night and was fine during the day at this level.
So I changed it to a little above and so far my wifi issues are gone!! I wonder if there's a bug when the brightness is at its lowest level to turn off the network.

My iPad 16gb had the brightness/wifi problem within the first week. My wife would turn the brightness down in bed at night by moving the slider to the farthest left possible. The next time I used it, no wifi. I changed settings (including brightness, but only inadvertently) and it came back. This went on for a few days, me thinking the wifi was erratic since I never pinpointed the brightness as the problem. After seeing an explanation of this on Apple's forums, I tested it repeatedly and indeed, keeping the brightness slightly above the lowest setting works but if I set the brightness all the way down, then bye bye wifi.

The iPad wifi works fine, even outside, though it will lose connections outside occasionally, as does our laptops. Speed is another issue - it definitely can be slow even next to the router. This happens almost half the time. Hope the new firmware/software updates fix that.
