Apple updates the iWork suite for iPad

iWork users rejoice! Apple is updating Pages, Numbers and Keynote for the iPad. A quick check at the app store or through iTunes should get you all sparkly and new.

In Pages, one of the big fixes is that the tool and ruler and now available in Landscape view. That's a biggy because you had to be in portrait view to see any of those tools in version 1.0.

Apple has also added some additional language support in the apps, and done some work to get better compatibility with Microsoft Word documents. Here's the details for all the updated apps, which appear to have fixed some of the worst complaints people had.

All the apps have included language support for French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.

Pages fixes are mainly about how nicely it plays with Microsoft Word documents. There are also some cosmetic cleanups.

Numbers also gets a slew of updates and fixes including better behavior when importing from Numbers on the Mac, table formatting fixes, and some fixes for applying new styles and formula updating.

Finally, Keynote gets some Apple first aid too. Among the fixes is an enhanced front/back slider in the Arrange panel, better import from Keynote '09 and PowerPoint, and some cosmetic updates.

Details about all the fixes are on the apps individual pages, and you can click on the links above to get there.

These updates should go a long way to softening many of the complaints people have had about these iPad apps. It was very disturbing that the first release had so many problems with moving documents back and forth between the Mac environment and the iPad versions. Hopefully, this will clean up the mess. Let us know.

[Thanks to several sharp-eyed readers for tipping us to the updates]

So... no reports about editing docs on the mac, then on the ipad, then back to the mac?

I wonder if the issues there are fixed or not. For me a BIG showstopper to buy Pages once the iPad arrives in NL....

guys...damn...relax...they will make it better and better with every update

you people act as if there was already something on the market to compare it to...when was the last time you saw one of those crapbooks (netbooks) running Office well? prob never...because 1Gb of Ram and a shitty Atom processor isn't going to do anything running Windows Starter

so chill...and just enjoy what you have in your hands...an amazingly popular product that everyone loves...if you really NEED to do all this office type stuff on the go...bring your MacBook or shut up...it's totally annoying and rude

what about document management? Once you have over 10 documents it becomes rather annoying to have to flick through the large icons in cover flow view mode. What about a file tree view or folder view or something? This is going to stink if there are tons of documents on the thing.

i couldn't agree more here. And while we're at it iTunes based document sharing is poor! Give us a real sync/disk mode/native afp & smb, something!

Don't hold your breath, the iPad Human Interface Guidelines document specifically suggest a lack of traditional file management.

It's unlikely, but I would FREAKING LOVE to get some Dropbox support (and box.net etc for others).

This is the reason I will abandon Pages for QuickOffice as soon as they get the iPad app going, and would abandon both of those for MS Office Live and/or Google Docs that actually worked in the iPad.

I am interested in buying Pages.

You can use it as a notebook or to write a book or are pages limited and/or a better option for iPad.

Any advice appreciated!

Lack of tab key on keyboard still represents fail across the whole application set.

Still need to go to the toolbar and a MENU to get a tab in pages, still no tab capability in keynote, and no toolbar in numbers as well. One of the most basic things that you need for entering data is STILL missing by default.

FAIL!

Still no export from Numbers iPad to Excel - that's been the biggest complaint since Numbers for iPad was launched!

That is the exact reason I have not purchased the app.

Yeah, iWork export is a poor substitute but it will do until they add this

Sadly, Keynote still doesn't support editing in portrait mode. That makes it nearly impossible to edit using the Apple Keyboard Dock. *sigh*
