Full-featured Navigon MobileNavigator gets temporary price cut

Just in time for those summer vacations, Navigon has dropped the price of the full North American version to U.S. $49.99. That's a 30 dollar savings.

Of all the GPS apps I've tested, I found the Navigon app to be the most full-featured and accurate. The screen is very clear and it is easy to use the many features included. I especially like the display of speed limits, and the ability to get a warning if I go over. Text-to-speech is very clear, and local search, which uses Google, is very handy and keeps the points of interest information up to date.

You can also enhance the app with additional purchases of live traffic info, and a 3D panorama view that shows you the contours of the geography you are driving through.

My only quibble with most of the full featured nav apps is that they are too darned expensive. The Navigon sale price puts it where I think the retail price should be all the time. At the upper end of $80 or $100, it puts these apps too close to the versions that have dedicated hardware.

If you've been lusting after GPS, it's a great time to grab this best-selling app. The sale lasts until June 11. If you've been tempted before, but the price put you off, you've lost that excuse. Last November, Navigon cut the price of the app to $69.99, so this is the best price yet.

Navigon MobileNavigator runs on the iPhone, and iPod touch with additional hardware. A company spokesperson told me they are considering some specialized iPad apps but have nothing specific to announce yet.

One other feature that a good navigation app should have is a voice command feature. Entry of destination and all commands are by voice. No button punching along with, of course voice guidance on the route.

As far as I know, none of the apps in the app store has this voice command capability.

In this respect the navigation apps in the app store are from back in the 90's.

I am thinking that navigation apps will hit their stride when they are $9.99 or less to buy with $4.99 or less annual upgrades that are available but not required.

I already have a built int GPS in the car, but putting it on a 9 inch screen with 3D and live traffic updates would be awesome. That would essentially mean I do not need to be able to look out my windshield or use headlights when driving at night. Very cool!

After 6 months with Navigon I STILL think it SUCKS compared to a dedicated garmin unit. I STILL think at $50 it is overpriced for what it does, although it's closer to what I'd consider fair/reasonable pricing of $20-40. I still however think it's the best GPS app for the iPhone... just not a 50 dollar app.

#1 The POI database SUCKS... seriously NOTHING I search for that isn't a fast food chain EVER is found... Thank god they added google search, that's actually useful.

#2 At version 1.6 they STILL can't display podcasts from within the app, you ca start them and then return to the app with them playing, but not

One wonders how many more copies of software like this would be purchased if the price were $6.99 instead of $49.99.

Eventually, someone will try the micro price, and it would not surprise me to learn that they sell 100X the current or higher price point.

Price perception is logarithmic. Ask yourself: What sounds better: $5,000 or $250? No mystery there.

But which product is better: The one that costs $0.50 or the one that costs $0.69? Now you start asking questions.

But that's the so-called Big Deal spread from Navigon. They're trying to tell you that it's a "THIRTY DOLLAR SAVINGS", and that makes me think they're trying to railroad me into buying a second-rate product. Or hook me into buying those extras they sell.

If the base unit were under $10, I might get it as an impulse buy, along with 100 times as many other customers, but as it is, the lowered price simply makes me question the value structure.

I'll pass.

What you are describing is already available:

MotionX GPS Drive:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motionx-gps-drive/id328095974?mt=8

It's $0.99 and comes with 30 days of real-time routing with Live Voice Guidance.

After that 30 days you can either buy another 30 days for $3, or buy a year for $25.

Andy I. did a great write up on GPS apps for the iPhone including Motion X GPS which he said was his favorite.

I still prefer my trusty old Garmin to using GPS on my iPhone, but if I was going to start with a GPS app for the iPhone, it would be Motion X.

FWIW ... Like Andy I, I live in Chicago and have found the MotionX to be a neat, but alas, unreliable tool. It has sent me to the wrong lane (making it impossible to exit the Chicago highway when I needed to), told me that dead ends were thru streets, and occasionally been unable to produce a map at all. In one word, the feel was "unreliable." I went back to my Navigon. YMMV

I just am sick of the fact that the "My Region" version of the app still doesnt have the 3d view available. (v1.5?)

I'm pretty sure I paid $59.99 at one time. At $50, it's a no-brainer.
