First Look: Beejive for the iPad
BeeJive is a solid IM client for the iPhone and has been a favorite of staff members since its original release. Suffice it to say, there were a few of us who were more than a little happy when the iPad version was released today. If you've used the iPhone sibling, BeeJive won't be that different to you. You can send files and photos from the app itself, though you can only select from a photo album for the latter. You can record audio messages and share chats with other people through e-mail, customize the wallpaper and toggle sounds among default, Yahoo, AIM or MSN. Emoticons still work, though the ability to use the /me emote is absent. You can also join chatrooms, that feature in and of itself setting BeeJive above its competitors. BeeJive still supports push notification and upon first launch will ask you if you want to enable them -- just make sure not to be alerted for each message if you are in a chatroom!
The main difference is in the interface (see screenshot below). The horizontal view has a three-column view of your buddy list, the current chat window and a list of active chats. The vertical view dispenses with the buddy list column, changing it to a popover you can bring up as needed. The vertical view is preferable for when you're using the iPad's keyboard, as it eats up far too much real estate in horizontal mode.

If you're looking for a solid multi-IM client for the iPad, you won't get much better than BeeJive. It's currently on sale for $5.99 through the App Store, so if you want it, snag it now.
Edit: We have noticed that those using a DiNovo Bluetooth Keyboard are having issues with their text coming out double-spaced. You may want to grab an alternate keyboard or use the built-in one on the iPad until this issue is resolved.

Unfortunately they've chosen to waste all that space on the right with the active chat list. Look how much space you're wasting even when you've only got one chat open. I would have instead just made it so that you had to drag your finger or hold your finger on the buddy name in the buddy list to switch. Stupid Stupid Stupid.

May 20 2010 at 4:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAll I'd like to know is will it allow web browsing within the app like IM+ does. :) I don't seem to see any hint of it in the screenshots or feature list.

May 20 2010 at 1:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyExcept it seems to be only for opening links come in conversation from what I've read and seen. In IM+ a browser is fully integrated and available via the "Globe" tab at any time. I'm a Beejive iPhone user, but I have to say IM+ seems to have gotten the iPad right for now unless I'm missing something here.
May 20 2010 at 10:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyA suggestion for people like myself who bought the $16 iPhone version and don't feel like shelling out for a half-baked iPad version... Jailbreak your iPad and install FullForce. FullForce lets you run many iPhone applications full screen on your iPad without the horrible aliased pixel-doubling. It looks totally native. I'm running BeeJive with it and it looks terrific. No need to upgrade at all.
And for you kids who want to flame me for jailbreaking, save your breath. I'm not stealing anything, nor am I advocating stealing anything. You will not convince me that there's anything wrong with modifying the product I own in the way that I see fit. Seriously, save your breath.
Kudos for the Office Space themed screenshots they used.

Maybe I'd pay a few bucks, but I'm not paying for $26 for two almost identical applications, there is no added functionality here - something universal apps were designed to address, apps with duplicate functionality on the iPad and iPhone.
Anyway, AIM looks pretty, has push notifications and their own "lifesteam" thing, I honestly don't think I personally am missing much by not buying it.
You guys can say as much as you want that you're gonna go with IM+ because it has a free version, but the fact is, Beejive is a superior product. You get what you pay for. And if I can afford a sandwich for 7 dollars, I can afford this.
I have to say I personally find it funny how in the world of apps people for some reason feel really entitled to get everything for free, and how suddenly 7 dollars is outrageous.
I paid 15 bucks for the iPhone version. Being that Beejive for iPad is 6 and the iPhone version is 10, I would really appreciate being able to upgrade via in app puchase. My first instinct herevwas to write a hateful rant. But business is business. The sad thing is that I will probably end up paying. But I won't be happy about it and when friends ask which IM app is best I will have to recommend IM+ from now on. Previously I would recommend Beejive. But the feature set is nearly identical and IM+ isn't squeezing me for a couple more bucks.
