Found Footage: Apple pulls iSlam Muhammad app

In what is sure to raise a ruckus, comedian / filmmaker / app developer Emery Emery recorded a phone call with an Apple App Store rep when his iSlam Muhammad app was pulled from the App Store after one day. The highly entertaining conversation in its entirety can be heard by watching the "video" above.

iSlam Muhammad apparently depicted images of the prophet Muhammad (forbidden by Islam) and outlined disturbing passages from the Qur'an. It's surprisingly similar to BibleThumper, a Christian-bashing app that remains in the App Store.

This act of Apple censorship coincides with International Draw Muhammad Day, an Internet event designed to demonstrate how radical Islamic factions are causing traditional news outlets to self-censor themselves in fear of violent retaliation. This event has resulted in the country of Pakistan banning Facebook and YouTube, both of which have a number of pages that are touting the event.

What's disappointing is that this points out Apple's lack of consistency in approval of apps, as well as their inability to provide recourse to developers who have had apps rejected for seemingly weak reasons. Now, let the comments begin! Be civil.

Did the iSlam Mohamed app have any gratuitously nasty depictions? If so, I can understand their move to a degree. However, if it was presented in the same manner as BibleThumper - simply exposing the koranic passages and commenting on the hypocrisy - then I would be outraged.

Apple should realise that the koran itself is offensive to many. Therefore, on exactly the same grounds that it has apparently pulled the iSlam Mohamed app (if they pulled it simply because it satirised Islam), it should also pull any Apps promoting Islam. Otherwise just leave them both there.

Glad apple pulled that app, I mean we wouldn't see a Slam Jesus app would we, I'm not religious at all but we should all respect everybodies beliefs, not allowing woman to wear the berka in France is backward too man, most muslim woman aren't forced to wear that, they are proud to wear it.
Most if not all Catholic Priests are gay that's fact yet they hide it and they are against gay marriage, the only males they come in contact with are alter boys so these gay priests advance and sure they're peds, because if a gay man has sex or whatever with a minor he's a ped.
So what have we learnt here - muslims are decent people and alot of priests are homosexual and around little boys they go PED.
Give Islam a break.

I am Muhammod, and I speak from grave. I was just kidding with all this people can't depict my image... Actually, it's really because I don't want any of my enemies and thieves to rob my grave... but that's another thing....

I am really troubled by all this violence after my death, and I want to retract this whole thing.... I know I wrote this book and all... And I really want to change that passage about it being a crime and all..... Nobody knows where I'm buried any more... So I really don't care...

I'm trying to pass a legacy of promotion of peace... You know... Islam is a religion of peace thing... It's just idiotic that I have all these "followers" being such hypocrites and all... Just because I have added this depicting my image is against Islam thing....

Any way... I just want let you all know again.... It's not really a crime... Or against the religion if u depict my image... I mean... Does anybody really know how I look like? I had these really big eyes and small nose and puffy ear... These pictures they draw are just so wrong... Any way... Again... It's no longer a crime.... Okay....

biblethumper

I'm the author of Biblethumper & here's my take on this: Apple probably drew the line at depicting Muhammed. Biblethumper was never about Christianism vs. Islam but about the perils of fundamentalist organized religion. iSlam should stay!

The thing is though, it's not wrong. Apple clearly states in its developer program that it will ultimately decide whether or not an app can be sold in the iTunes App Store or not. Developers like Emery Emery agreed that they understand this policy when they sign up to become a developer for Apple's App Store. And that's exactly what it is: APPLE's App Store. Sure, sometimes it's pretty disappointing, but I'm happy Apple is actually putting in the time to look over these apps. It may not always be consistent, but at least it's something. I understand Emery Emery's disappointment, but posting this video isn't going to help him at all. Apple will keep it in mind, and because it always has the ultimate say-so, his app will never get approved. He could have not posted this and moved on. Now that he's posted it, Apple won't let do much at all now.

@dave.rich
you are a jerk. you know that. why should we care about someone else's beliefs. it's called respect. something you clearly don't have since to you it is okay to permit something offensive in the name of your precious Free Speech

guess what. your right ends where someone else's begin. My right to be free from the violence of a panicked riot outweighs your right to yell fire in a crowded room. My right to practice my religion, which might not be the same as yours (and you can 'get over it' as you say) outweighs your right to freely speak in ways that are patently offensive and thus mock my religion.

Your comment so completely offended my religion that I must ask you for a retraction. My religion is the U.S. Constitution. My rights do not end where yours begin. Yelling "Fire!" in a crowded room is against the law here in the US, and we're both bound by that law if you live here. However, yelling "Muhammad was a pedophile" or "Muhammad was a terrorist" is not against Federal law or the Constitution. I can yell that directly into your face and not break any law whatsoever. Your "right" to practice your religion does certainly not outweigh my right to freely speak whatever the hell I want about your religion.

While I don't like how kgb99a says what he says, I think he's right. I believe people do have a right to say whatever they want about a subject in the name of free speech.

However, I stand with Charli on the matter of respect. Not the way he explains it, but the idea that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Down that road lies a heck of a lot of disrespecting.

1. Apple has the right to not sell whatever they don't want to sell. Don't like it, don't sign up to be a developer

2. did anyone here actually see the iSlam descript. "enjoy violent and hateful passages from The Qur'an that support and encourage Muslims to attack and behead anyone who does not agree with them. See how Allah directs his followers to treat men and women."
that could be seen as encouraging people to commit acts of violence.

so not a shock Apple removed it.

Why keep provoking these people? Wouldn't it be better if we just ignored them? Personally I don't care about anyone's religion so I'm not going to waste my time with it. Maybe if everyone did the same, these people would keep quiet.

Unfortunately ignoring muslims doesn't work very well. If we ignore them they'll continue to attempt terrorist attacks in the U.S. and abroad, continue human rights violations in almost every muslim country, and continue to fight to enforce Sharia law all over the world. Wake up.

I'm glad that he's willing to voice the dev's concerns to his "higher level ... upper management ... folks".

Is that like Toby's box for Dwight's complaints in The Office?

The bible app doesn't contain slandering pictures of biblical prophets, or Jesus. Where as the Islamic app did. This difference could be enough to signal poor intentions, and hateful ones, on the part of the Islam app, enough possibly to removed. The Bible app is a athiest guide to critiqing the bible, there for has useful and educational purpose, without seeing the Islamic apps work on the Quran it is hard to know weather the apps approach was more hate designed then logical critiques. Non-theless it would be nice if Apple were more open.
