Industry analyst -- iPad outselling the Mac

Industry analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets is bullish on the iPad, noting that at this early date, Apple is selling more than 200,000 a week of the new device. By comparison, US sales of Macs are hovering at about 110,000 per week and sales of the iPhone 3GS are at about 246,000 per week based on first quarter 2010 sales figures.

Now, remember that this is all based on the iPad selling in one country -- the United States. The official international launch of the iPad is coming up at the end of next week, which prompted Abramsky to raise his estimate of global iPad sales during 2010 from 5 million to a whopping 8 million.

Some may be thinking that iPad sales are cannibalizing sales of Macs, but Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster shot that theory down earlier in the week, noting that it's more likely that iPod sales will suffer. UBS analyst Maynard Um ran a small survey which showed that most iPad buyers don't see the device as a replacement for their more traditional computers, including Macs.

Many analysts are of the opinion that the iPad, like the iPhone before it, will generate a "halo effect" that will drive sales of other Apple products as well.

I really agree with TexRob. I have imagined the iPad as many things, but one of them is as an interface for a media center mac--the AppleTV of our dreams that would stream music and movies, act as a Wifi network hub and a time machine. All that, and serve as a tivo for my flatscreen and to send 5.1 dolby audio through my house system. The thing is, none of that seems difficult, but right now it would take two or three of those little boxes. Why not one?

...can Kindle 'rebate' deals be far behind?

I love my iPad, but it's not a Kindle. eInk is easier on the eyes, and much less power consumption, not to mention the weight. My wife thinks my iPad is pretty neat, but she LOVES her Kindle2. I tend to agree, iPad is great for light duty reading, but the Kindle is still king IMHO.

@TexRob

From the opposite perspective:

"I love my iPad, and I'm so glad it's not a Kindle. eInk is a little easier on the eyes, and much less power consuming, not to mention lighter, but it's a single-use device. My wife thinks her iPad is pretty neat, because she can play games, surf the web, and watch videos and when she goes to bed I can read on the iPad without the need for a reading lamp. I tend to agree, the iPad may not be a perfectly ideal reading device, but as an overall gadget it wins hands down."

Just imagine how many of these would sell if it ran OS X?

Any thoughts on the iPad assaulting the iPhone sales? Might people drop the iPhone and go back to the older-style phone, now that the iPhone has gone jumbo?

Lower barrier to entry, it makes perfect sense. Plus, it's not like it's eating into actual Mac sales.

I can see the iPad eating into mac sales.
I was interested in buying a second computer for my family but now I am just going to buy an iPad. The upside for Apple is that i'll eventually end up buying a iPad for everyone in the house. Where as I would have never brought everyone a laptop.
