Neal Stephenson to release serialized story via mobile devices
Here's an intriguing idea: author Neal Stephenson and a few friends (including Greg Bear and Nicole Galland) are going to be releasing a set of serialized stories as apps for the iPad and the iPhone. The project is called "The Mongoliad," and is based on a world designed by Stephenson (author of the great novels Snow Crash and The Diamond Age). The apps will present "an ongoing stream of nontextual, para-narrative, and extra-narrative stuff," and even ask readers to interact and create their own stories in the universe with some "pretty cool tech." Interesting.
There's not a lot of information out right now about what the project is exactly, but there is a Facebook page with a few more details, and a skeleton page where you can sign up for more information. I guess they're taking the wraps off of the project in a few days on May 25th, so presumably then you'll be able to download the app (which will also be available on Android and the Kindle), and see what it's all about.
I'm a big fan of Stephenson (as anyone interested in computers and how they work probably should be), so I'm definitely intrigued about what he and his colleagues will do with Apple's platform. Stay tuned.

iPad and iPhone only?
Say its not so. This would be so disheartening. I am not sure I could bring myself to embrace these platforms, even for some of my favorite authors.
Glad to see that other authors are realizing the power of the serialized story in today's "fragmented" content world. At Dime Novel Publishing (www.dimenovelpublishing.com), we are attempting to do just that--bring back the dime novel format for the e-book generation. Consider it a resurrection of sort. We already have 3 original series running and quite a few others coming out this year. Although ours are focused on a young-adult audience, we will definitely be launching more mature content as well. Of course, the content we have developed is just a way to bring more attention to the model. We are working with several other authors who think the medium is a great way to write. Although we don't have the budget that these authors have, we are also actively working with other narrative means (blog, twitter, social media) to create complimentary channels to develop story, character, and environment. This is really great news and validates what Dime Novel Publishing is trying to do.

The Mongoliad is also the beginning of an experiment in storytelling, technology, and community-driven creativity.
Our story begins with a serial novel of sorts, which we will release over the course of about a year. Neal Stephenson created the world in which The Mongoliad is set, and presides benevolently over it. Our first set of stories is being written by Neal, Greg Bear, Nicole Galland, Mark Teppo, and a number of other authors; we're also working closely with artists, fight choreographers & other martial artists, programmers, film-makers, game designers, and a bunch of other folks to produce an ongoing stream of nontextual, para-narrative, and extra-narrative stuff which we think brings the story to life in ways that are pleasingly unique, and which can't be done in any single medium.
Very shortly, once The Mongoliad has developed some mass and momentum, we will be asking fans to join us in creating the rest of the world and telling new stories in it. Thatâs where the real experiment part comes in. We are building some pretty cool tech to make that easy and fun, and we hope lots of you will use it.
People will be able to get The Mongoliad over the web and via custom clients for mobile devices - we're going to start out with iPad, iPhone, Android, and Kindle apps, and will probably do more in the not too distant future.
I'm assuming he meant Philip K. Dick. P.K.D.

What use is the XML file. I couldn't get anything to open it. Word said it was missing an XML information file and BBEdit opened it as one line long
Also, if you can be there in person, the show is broadcast via ustream.tv: http://sfappshow.com/live starting at 7pm PT Tue May 25.
May 22 2010 at 10:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThanks for setting up the stream (I know it's not the easiest thing to do, esp. while on the road). I'm going to be on the east coast so I will have to live the experience vicariously through ustream =).
