Wave goodbye to the iPhone 3G
Update: Engadget also points out that Walmart is now selling the iPhone 3GS for $97, a sure inventory-clearing move.According to Boy Genius Report, the iPhone 3G is very likely to be discontinued. Apple has reportedly stopped supplying AT&T stores with the 8 GB iPhone 3G. Additionally, the Australian online Apple Store lists the iPhone 3G as "currently unavailable," and UK carrier O2 has altered its ordering options in a way that makes it impossible to purchase the low-end iPhone.
It's not at all shocking that the iPhone 3G is most likely about to be discontinued. The two-year-old hardware is relatively anemic even compared to its successor, the 3GS. Because of its lower RAM and CPU speed, the iPhone 3G won't enjoy all the benefits of iPhone OS 4.0, particularly multitasking. Once the iPhone 3G is discontinued, one of two things will probably happen -- see them both after the link below.
[Via MacRumors]
1. The 16 GB iPhone 3GS will fill the low-end, US$99 spot currently held by the 8 GB iPhone 3G.
2. The iPhone 3GS may be discontinued as well, with the forthcoming iPhone filling all price points. Although so far, there's no indication that the 3GS is experiencing the same sort of shortages as the iPhone 3G, which makes this scenario far less likely.
Bottom line: if for some odd reason you still wanted to pick up an iPhone 3G, it may already be too late. At this stage, though, that's probably a good thing.

I just called 6 different Walmarts that are within 10 miles of me and while 5 of them carried the iPhone, none of them had them in stock. Apparently they've all been sold out, and I don't feel like calling any farther, especially towards San Francisco and Fremont where the President is at the moment.

I was handed an droid phone on the weekend to give it a try and although it has some nice features there is no way I would want one when comparing it to an iPhone. I'm not even going to waste time clicking on your link.

May 25 2010 at 8:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replysmall mined 'me me me' types who do nothing but harp on about whats wrong with their iphones or are getting rid of it! Do I care not one jot so stopt interrupting the intelligent convos on here with your inane whining. The iPhone is the best smartphone ever produced, sure i have issues with it but it doesn't stop me and millions of others enjoying it.
May 25 2010 at 6:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI love my 3G! Though I'm happy to say I'm getting a 3Gs this Friday (my father doesn't want his anymore). Looking forward to the increased speed, though I know in about 3 weeks I'll be like "ah well my 3Gs can do that too.. sort of." :).

May 24 2010 at 11:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat about the iPhone 3G that are still in warranty? Will they keep making replacement units?
May 24 2010 at 11:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor discontinued merchandise that's still under warranty, Apple maintains a supply of refurb units for the Geniuses and AppleCare to use for warranty replacements. In the uncommon event that they no longer have your specific model, they'll give you a better one.
May 24 2010 at 11:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm ready to throw my Nokia E71 off a bridge after the new iPhone comes out. I have never owned an iPhone and it kills me when I read complaints about not getting support for older models. You can have my E71 if you want it. No? Ya, that's what I thought.
May 24 2010 at 10:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySuch a narrow-minded, iPhone-bashing comment!
The only iPhone that OS 4.0 will not support is the original iPhone, which is coming up on three years now.
As for "audible reminders of missed calls & voicemails [sic] that optionally continue until you cancel them," think about it. Who would opt-in for such a feature, especially in a society where there are so many places where unnecessary noise is frowned upon? Who would want to hear someone else's phone alerting repeatedly? Very few.
As for "the ability to have the phone's data override the computer's when syncing," iPhone does this.
As for "the ability of third-party apps to sync data with a companion app on the computer?" It can be done via wi-fi or Bluetooth. With so many wi-fi hotspots around the world, it's as simple as connecting both devices to the same network. A MacBook can even create an ad-hoc wireless network for when such functionality is needed where a traditional wi-fi hotspot is unavailable.
Finally, regarding syncing: I, for one, am happy that there's one app that can manage my music and apps. It's crazy simple, and builds on the familiarity of syncing an iPod. I would rather have one app that syncs everything to my iPhone than one app to sync music, another app to sync contacts, another app to sync apps, etc.
Also consider this: iTunes makes a backup of your iPhone every time you sync. I have heard too many horror stories about someone losing a non-Apple phone, claiming that all the contacts stored on it are gone forever. Not with iPhone. If you lose your iPhone, you can have it wiped remotely, buy another iPhone, and transfer the data from the backup of your old iPhone to your new iPhone. How many phones can do that?
Yeah and pity the person with a Nokia or a Sony...
Those phones never get updated. My last Nokia before moving to iPhone had the same faults in the SMS application as did the model before and they still do a few years later.
Yet they have an option for updating the firmware.
It never comes though, ever...
