Engadget: Sam Mendes shooting Apple ads, video chat to be featured

Here's another juicy iPhone rumor. Engadget reports that American Beauty director Sam Mendes will be shooting the next batch of Apple ads, and at least one will feature video chat.

Quoting some rather telling tweets, Engadget has put together that auditions are underway. An actress posted the message you see above, in which she's praying for a role in "a F***ing Apple commercial," while another tweet from a different actor reads, "off to a commercial audition for Apple."

In addition, Engadget paraphrases "a trusted source" by saying that at least one ad will feature a mother and daughter talking via video chat with their iPhones, giving further credence to the front-facing camera that appeared in the prototypes that Gizmodo and Tinhte recently showed off.

Are you excited? We are. See you on the 7th!

I've read alot about this story and i'm trying to work out why commentators are pointing out the swearing as a negative?!
If it was a negative remark on her part about the role why would she then be praying for it?

It's kinda silly to attempt to anonymize the name of the actress since it takes only a few seconds to search twitter for the text.

@stand: It looks like ViFlaten killed her Twitter account (even though it's been RT'ed about a billion times now).

@vandil: The director has his people line up the auditions from the usual sources, the only reason they tie that to video chat is that it was reported elsewhere that Sam Mendes was working on a video chat commercial. This is just (weakly) confirming that information.

I also wonder how the casting works for the fake people that appear in photos and movie footage used during Apple's keynotes.

(e.g. Did they tell the people playing on a pier that that video footage would be used in the keynote for the iPod Nano w/video cam? Or the fake vacationers in Paris that they would be the fake people seen on an iPhoto Places demo?)

Those people aren't fake. According to Mike Evangelist, a former director of product marketing, Apple actually calls on employees to submit real photos and home movies (or at least, they used to).

You can read about it here:

"Next came the task of finding suitable sample material. My team was given the task of locating locate movies, photos and music to be used when he created his sample DVD on stage. Most companies would just choose some clipart or hire a video producer to make some simulated ‘home movies’. Steve prefers real people’s photos and home movies. He wanted material that looked great, yet did not seem impossible for an average person to achieve. We called on everyone we knew at Apple to submit their best home movies and snapshots. Before long we had an amazing collection of fun, cool and heartwarming videos and photos. My team picked the best and confidently presented them to Steve. True to his reputation as a perfectionist, he hated most of them. We repeated that process several times before he was satisfied. At the time I thought he was being unreasonable; but I ultimately had to admit the material we ended up with was much better than we had begun with."

I would think that the first step to being cast in a f***ing Apple commercial is: You don't talk about the f***ing Apple commercial.

Video Chat.
Things that make you go hmmm.

Looks like the video phone that everybody predicted 30 years ago might finally hit mainstream. If this works over Edge/3G iPhone sales will skyrocket. I have used the Knocking Live App many times and it is just outright awesome. And it only shows live video - one way - with no audio. To be able to stand on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas and stream live video to my son back in Colorado was an awesome experience. And then he did the same from Mexico. Add video/audio both ways and this will truly be a game changer.

* On a side note:
ATT charged my son $1016 for the 61MB he used to stream live video from Mexico. I thought he was on Wi-Fi! They did backdate a 100Mb plan for $100 though. Whew!

Whoa whoa whoa. These are probably the people who will be in the iPhone 4G ads this WWDC/Summer. Or even people who may star in new iPad ads. Or even in an iAd...
