NBC and Time Warner in no hurry to say farewell to Flash
If you're not familiar with New York City's gritty, 209-year-old tabloid the Post, it has a reputation for sensationalist coverage, a top-down conservative slant (courtesy of owner Rupert Murdoch), and a credibility problem; in 2004, a Pace University survey found that city residents considered it the least trustworthy of the NYC dailies. When it comes to coverage of the Big Apple's media industry, however, it usually finds the mark. That's why this week's Post story about NBC Universal and Time Warner pushing back on adapting streaming video libraries for iPad is worth a second look.
The piece suggests that neither of the media giants is interested in putting in the effort to step away from Flash and create HTML5-savvy streaming websites, saying that Flash remains dominant, and the effort to convert their libraries isn't worth it. Contrast this with CBS and ABC's eager leap onto the iPad, and the continuing signs that NBC-owned Hulu is planning an iPad app.
I don't doubt that both TW and NBC would like to see Apple become a little less dominant in the media landscape, but what's weird about this story is that it implies that the "extensive video libraries" that both companies hold aren't already entirely iPad-friendly. Sure, the player interface may be Flash on their websites, but the content itself is very much iPad and iPhone compatible as H.264 video files. Of course, both companies are happy to sell their programs through the iTunes store, although that hasn't always been the case for NBC.
With this not-quite-sensical disrespect for the iPad's video prospects, where does that leave us? Is the Hulu app now programa non grata? Will we be shut out of TNT for the new Apple TV? Don't know, can't say... yet.

So I'll assume that your willing to admit that this website is a left wing propaganda machine? I've never seen an article on here talking about the New York Times and its massive yearly losses, readership hemorrhaging, and TOP DOWN LEFT WING BIAS. So clearly you're in the tank for them.

Confidence is great but too much is cocky! SJ is getting really cocky! People are buying Androids more than iPhones right now. The number one and two reason for the recent but noticeable exodus is the carrier and no flash. For some reason I really believe SJ will wake up and make the right moves to move iBrand forward. Is flash is necessary? For me, no...But I would like to make the choice for myself. Choice is good, we need a choice! People need to see for themselves that flash is either good of bad.
Time will tell who the real leaders are going to be. If SJ keeps his position he will see iPhone sales slip into Palm Pre sales and then off the map!
My father always says " a tree that does not bend in the wind will break".
Which way will Apple go? I hope SJ remembers just like people went crazy over the iPhone, they can just as easily go crazy over another phone, especially, if it has the functionality that is desired.
Then it's a crying shame that they'll be missing my eyeballs for the purposes of selling advertising dollars, innit? The "male-30's-lots of disposable income-low sales resistance" demo is pretty valuable, but if they don't NEED to be able to sell advertising that can reach me (someone who's willing to drop nearly a thousand on silly gadgetry), then that's great for them.
This striking sense of business acumen on the part of NBC exemplifies why they are in the process of getting eaten by Comcast.
Does anyone else find the following funny?
When Apple is rumored to be investigated for anti-competitive practices commenters and forum goers quickly talk about how no one has to use the iPhone or the iPad. Consumers and developers are free to choose which device and services they want. They usually also say something about Apple not even having a majority market share in mobile devices.
When a company decides to use a technology that Apple doesn't support, commenters and forum goers are aghast at how a company could go agains the grain of what a majority of consumers want. In this case there may be choices in the market place, but apparently all but one is irrelevant.
Dan, you say android sells well because of special deals. You can get refurb iphones from AT&T for $50. Walmart is now selling 3G iphones for $97.
Just because something is widely available doesn't make it a bad thing as some of you people seem to be implying. It just means google made a smart move. It means choice. I can choose my carrier, whoever works best in my area. I can choose different phones. Android already offers more features than the iphone and supports flash. If apple's market share continues to stagnate and android continues it's growth then apple will have to support flash if they want to continue to grow.
It will be interesting to see what next month brings.
Well Jaz, since you like to pull numbers out of your ass i'll give you facts to back up my statement: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/android-market-share-passes-iphones-npd-data-2010-05-10
36% RIM
28% Android
21% iphone(growth as stalled, android still climbing rapidly)
And Leiwei, yes, android is on many phones and several carriers. But it still has a larger marketshare. And when it comes to web developers supporting what most people are using, well, android is it. Android and RIM. And thus, flash.
If NBC and Time Warner don't want to make there content available that's fine I will watch the ABC app and netflix, they will lose me as a customer, there are other places to watch things. Hope it all works out for them. Time Warner makes great decisions , how has buying AOL turned out?

With the other smart phones that support/going to support Flash it will be interesting to see if there is any impact at all. Most likely doubtful but why risk it if you don't have to.
It may have been smarter to just add support for Flash but leave it turned off by default. The majority of us that don't care about it would not be bothered and those that are screaming for it would be happy (crashes and all).
For once, I partially agree with Joanna D.
It would be hard for the Online Services departments of TW and Universal to turn around to the CEO and say "You know how we just spent all this money on Websites to display our content for free, something you didn't realy want us to do in the first place? We'll we screwed up and did it wrong, can we have more money so we can do it over, but this time properly?"
Expect TW and Universal to change their policy when they start to loose significant numbers of legitimate viewers. They will also probably reorganise their entire Online Services departments at the same time.
WRT Android Market Penetration, remember that almost half of all new Android device sales are part of "Buy One, Get One Free" deals to get rid of obsolete stock that can't even run Android 1.6, let alone 2.2. (don't even dream of running Flash on these puppies. They are slower than 1st Gen iPhones!)
@ Archer75 I see you like to go off topic, ok then.
Your sad attempt to make the droid (2010) look better than the 1st generation iPhone (2007) in sales, is pathetic.
And to your claims of market share (LOL!!!) sorry about that.
Q1 2010 iPhone= 15.9% ( 1 type of phone)
Q1 2010 Android= 9.6% ( many more than 1 type )
the consumers have voted indeed.
