Skype quietly delays charges for iPhone app calling

According to the fine print on the Skype iPhone app, free Skype to Skype calls will last all the way until the end of 2010. Yesterday, the date was given as the end of August, but it looks like we've all gotten an extension on Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G.
People were rather agitated about Skype deciding to charge for what had been free calls, but were pleased that the updated app finally supported calls over the 3G network.

Now the prospect of payment has at least been delayed, possibly because of the outcry from users -- comments on the changes haven't been pretty. The Skype folks haven't explained the change, or the reason for the charges to begin with. We'll stay tuned, and keep our ears open for why Skype might have delayed the planned charges.

Here are my thoughts on Skype’s plan to charge iPhone users for calls made over 3G:

Some people will find a way to complain about anything, anytime, in any form, by any means. These people must be a joy to be around.

I think they're just warming us up to charge to use video conferencing with next gen mobile devices.

Yep. Greed pure and simple. Skype is uninstalled.

eBay is to Amazon as Skype is to Goggle.

The eBay influence on Skype is unmistakable. Alienate your customers with price increases and that's why Amazon marketplace has gained so much market share against eBay. The price increases of 30% or more on Skype for subscribers is the same philosophy.

(Serious Question Here)

Can someone explain to me in simple terms how using Skype over 3G is useful? If I am in Oslo and want to make a call on my AT&T iPhone, I'd need to be on a Norwegian carrier, getting hit with charges. So I use Skype from hotel lobbies.

What are the benefits of this if I was from the US calling within the US? Skype to Skype I understand, but the 3G thing is throwing me a little.

Of course you do. But you pay that whether you make Skype calls or not. It doesn't make sense to say that you're getting charged twice.

Nothing like paying twice. One call = payment once to AT&T and once to Skype. With all these micro payments we should be out of this recession soon. Welcome to the future.
